UGH. DISGUSTING. Worst class. EVER.

After taking chem with Kaesz, I decided to drop being a Biology major. This man made me hate chemistry.

He does not teach at all. This class is agonizing to go to, if you go. The first day of class, there were kids in the aisle. You will notice that as the quarter progresses, there are less and less kids, and soon, if you're lucky, a quarter of the seats are taken. He has no idea what he is doing, I don't understand it. He just babbles for about 30 minutes. Sure, he's a nice guy, but definitely not a good professor. Section was equally sucky, but I think I just got a bad TA. Sigh.

AVOID THIS PROFESSOR AT ALL COSTS. If no one else is teaching it, wait a quarter. You'll be thankful that you did.

Kaesz isn't as bad as the reviews make him out to be. For one thing, he doesnt grade on a curve. 85% is an A, 65% is a B, 45% is a C! There's no getting screwed over by a average here. Yes, his tests are somewhat tricky, but he posts his previous midterms and finals online to study from. Getting an A in his class DOES require a bit of work, but even then, which pre-med class at UCLA doesnt? If you do the homework, read the book, go to office hours, ask questions on VOH, do the sample midterms/finals, and get tutoring, you can get an A/A-/B+ in the class. This class is probably easier than other professors teaching Chem 14A. Kaesz's lectures are good, they end early, and he covers most of the material. And he'll help you out in office hours if you need help. Overall, a great professor for 14A.

Like everyone said, this man cannot teach. He's a nice guy, and he'll try to help you, but as far as instructor-student communication, I place no faith in it. His lectures are very short and unorganized; it gets confusing, especially when he's doing calculations -- seems like he's pulling numbers out of thin air. Maybe he's more effective with a one-on-one (I mean, during OH; he ends class early and has it right after), but really, it was a quarter of pure frustration.

Don't get me wrong. Prof. Kaesz is a very very nice & funny guy and he really wants to help you learn your Chemistry but he can not teach chem well at all! I had to teach myself the chemistry! If you take him please study on your own quite a bit because he is very disorganized and does not cover all what will be on the quizzes and tests (esp the quizzes which really help your grade out). Please have study groups and some form of tutoring. I did well on really well on the midterms but surprizingly bombed the final but I do not take it as my fault because I took all of the advice I'm giving you now. He just was not a good chem teacher overall. I would recommend that you do go to his lectures because sometimes he tells exactly what type of material will be on the midterm. But if you can avoid this prof and/or find another Chem 14A prof that has more compliments on bruinwalk.com PLEASE TAKE THAT TEACHER. Do not take Prof. Kaesz if you don't have to.

Professor Kaesz is a very nice guy. However, I would recommend against him simply because he is extremely ineffective at teaching general chemistry. I stopped going to class towards the end of the quarter because it was pointless; I learned everything from the book on my own. In the beginning, his lectures were okay because he could be very funny but it got so monotone and boring later that I couldn't keep myself awake. I am the kind of person who attends class everyday and for me to stop attending his lectures means a lot. I've never worked so hard for a class (studying everyday, tutoring, doing each homework assignment 3 times before a test) and I ended up with a B+. If you are good at learning out of the book, then take this class. If not, I highly suggest taking another professor.

Professor Kaesz is not a good at teaching Chem 14A. He goes off topic, is unorganized and does not go over the material thoroughly. It became so pointless to go to lectures that I just ended up teaching myself out of the book. He liked ending class early rather than devoting that time to teaching the material. I didn't appreciate that. His tests were fair, but we never had adequate time to finish for the amount of problems he assigned. His final was tough in my opinion. However, he is helpful in office hours and is always available. So whatever you decide to do, make sure you give it some thought. I do not recommend professor Kaaesz for Chem 14A because you will not learn anything that will help you later in the Chem series.

Professor Kaesz was incrediby unorganized and his lectures were not helpful at all. It made the class very difficult because I had to teach myself chemistry out of the book. Make sure to go to discussion because the TAs make sure to try to explain everything that was not understood during lecture. He is a really nice guy and makes a lot of jokes during class, but basically is not an effective teacher. Tests are hard, but not that bad. It is not a hard class but if you want to really understand chem I wouldn't recommend him.
