This is the most relaxing GE class I have at UCLA. I have Adam as my TA who is great and helps us understand readings collectively. Overall, Dr. Carpio is very kind and I will 100% recommend this class!

The class is very engaging. Carpio is very organized, so you shouldn't ever be confused about what she's lecturing in class. You d have to read quite a bit, but you can honestly skim with friends. For the first half of the quarter, the vocabulary words are very important so just focus on knowing the significance of each word to Chicano history. The zine project is very laid back because there aren't many restrictions. Basically just know the vocabulary words and how they connect to history and each other.

Carpio is a nice and easy to understand lecturer. This was a pretty easy GE and also really interesting. Chicano history is especially relevant to Los Angeles. Discussion is mandatory attendance. I had Iris and she was a really fair TA, also really nice to talk to outside of class. Overall I would definitely take this class again. Highly recommend to everyone needing to fulfill a GE.

This is an easy GE with lots of reading that in my opinion does not need to be done as often as they require it, I would simply skim through some pages and I was fine. The only thing is before choosing this class I suggest to figure out whether you like history or not as this class focuses on social issues that have developed over decades ago. Professor Carpio is new so in my lectures she was just learning the ropes to things and so I believe that is why her presentations didn't seem to be very engaging. She is very compassionate and understanding as are all of the TAs. Personally I still preferred Chicano 10B since it was based more on social issues and strategies for change.

I loved this class so much! I'm an LA native that didn't know much about my city and this class taught me a lot. The exams and work was extremely light and I'd always be so excited to come to this class. The zine project was very simple, just be artistic and know the class material and you'll get an A. Professor Carpio was so understanding when corona problems started, and she made the final paper optional! Apart from that, she was so organized with every lecture, was always engaging her students, and etc. I highly recommend this class if anyone wants to take an easy GE with a light load of work, learn interesting topics, or broaden their knowledge about the Chicano/a/x culture! loved loved loved

I loved this class ! The midterm was divided in two parts: key-terms were done in section and 2 essays which were done in lecture. The TA’s graded really nice 🥺 There was also a zine which integrated keywords and the individual. Our final became optional because of the virus, but it was easy either way. There were 4 prompts to choose from and we had to write a 2-3 page essay for 2/4 prompts with a bibliography and keyword integration. If you need to buy the book for this class you can text me. The U.S Central Americans book was $30 new and I am selling it for $15, still new! My number is **********

Disclaimer: I took the class online.

Carpio is a great professor. She clearly explains concepts and gives definitions of all the concepts. She also takes feedback into consideration. As for the assignments, we had three papers each 5 pages long, including the final. The prompts were broad, allowing you to incorporate many course concepts. While this sounds good in theory, sometimes I felt like they were TOO broad and general. Usually, the TAs are not difficult graders though, so it's easy to get an A. There were also short assignments due at the end of the week but as long as you watch the lectures you can easily answer the questions. The material is also super interesting in my opinion, we watched this one documentary and it was really good. I recommend this class.
