I can't express how much I loved this class. Professor Jones was honestly the best professor I had my freshman year. He was beyond nice and considerate and very entertaining during class. I am the type of person to get bored during lectures, but his were very engaging. His lecture was 2 hours long but honestly felt like 30 minutes. I was tardy most lectures by like 30 minutes and he did not care, so as long as you do his in class assignments (which is very very easy), you could leave when its done. He also would end class early if everyone got their speeches done online. For the speech part of this class, it was very simple. Most speeches were 1-2 minutes long and you didn't have to memorize any of it. He gave very detailed instructions and was lenient to missing assignments or extensions. There is also no tests or midterms/finals for this class, and I did not consider the speech assignment as homework honestly. So if you are looking for a calm class which I very much needed (as a stem major), this class is for you.
Loved professor Jones! Public speaking can be intimidating, but he made the environment super welcoming and forgiving. He also graded leniently, if you went up and tried your best, you would get an A. Other than speeches, there were weekly reading responses and a final paper at the end of the term. There were also in class activities, but you basically just had to show up to class to get full credit. Take him if you can!!
I liked this class but beware of the final! The material was pretty interesting although sometimes confusing at times. Jones is very good at explaining things and very open to helping students. He would often stay very late to answer questions. Everything you need to know, he will tell you, and the TA's provide a study guide. This class is heavily based on memorization and understanding so the readings and lectures are a must do to do well. There is 1 midterm, 1 research paper, and the final. For the midterm, you can explain your answer to your TA to try and get some points back which bumped my exam grade up a letter grade. The biggest issue with this class was the final!! That exam was the most stressful exam I have ever taken in my life, not because it was hard but because it was too long for the time frame. The exam was week 10 so we took it during class but the exam should have been a standard 3 hour final. The questions on the exams are all written and some are a page long while others paragraphs or a few sentences. The first 3 questions took half the exam time alone and there were about 10-15 written questions. I found myself knowing the answers but struggling to write what I wanted to say because of how little time we had. The midterm wasn't curved but the final was and somehow I got a 97% because I studied for 2 weeks which bumped my grade from a B to an A. Overall, I enjoyed this class but the final exam needs to be fixed.
This class was interesting, however it is very similar to Comm 10. If you were good at memorizing "lists" of information to know on Comm 10 exams, you will be just fine because that is almost exactly how Comm 100 exams are structured. This class requires a lot of memorization of facts and definitions. However, I really enjoyed Professor Jone's attitude towards helping students.
Professor Jones is really nice and a great teacher, he talks really fast and the class covers a lot of content, so the tests are kind of hard. I feel like they were fairly graded though, especially for a required major class. Discussions are optional. Lots of reading.
This Class is AMAZING. This teacher is amazing. There is a lot of public speaking but if you like that challenge it will be very nice. The teacher is very accommodating but he is very attentive and very helpful when it comes to public speaking and making sure you feel confident when speaking in public. It's a very easy class but be attentive because depending on the condition he will definitely update the syllabus. But trust this is really an amazing class.
I can guarantee you that this class will be the absolute easiest class you've taken and will ever take. I know what you're probably thinking: you're just one reviewer (so far). TRUST MEEE: as long as you try, you aced every assignment. Also, he cultivates such a fun and honest class environment, like there wasn't a single class where I didn't burst out laughing with my peers. Such a good one! Please take Gabe!!!!!! :)
