I took this class during the quarantine, so my review may be different from other reviews.
When the class began, the professor seemed so nice. The lectures and discussions were fun and engaging, then the midterm came. The MIDTERM was supposed to take 2 HOURS MAXIMUM, but it took me 6 HOURS. The class average was over 8 hours and the professor did not really care about it. After a lot of complaints, (and I think someone talked to the department head), she just changed. She became very helpful and understanding. She gave us extra credit, replaced the lower grade for the test with the higher test, and gave a much easier final.
In the end, I kinda liked her. It was her first time in online teaching so she might not have known the difficulties, but overall, she deserves a higher rating than 2.4 (her rating was 2.4 when I wrote this review)

Mrs Cartmill is extremely boring and hard to learn from. She thinks she is very funny and laughs at all her "jokes", but she just is not. Overall, I am not interested in anthropology so I might be biased but this class is not interesting and has a heavy workload. The midterm is hard, I'm taking the final in a week so I will let you guys know. She also gets very mad if you don’t call her Dr. Would not recommend, not an easy GE.

Took this class during Spring 2020, and her midterm and final were half short answer and half essay questions. She said it was supposed to take 2 hours total, but the class averaged 8 hours taking the exams. We tried to explain our situations during the pandemic but she was unreasonable and uncompromising of our issues. Do not take this class, especially if it is online.

This class wasn't too bad but was a the concepts were a bit confusing at times. There were a couple homework assignments that took some time and an easy midterm and final. Overall a bit boring but decently easy.

disregard any of the past bad reviews if you are taking this class in person. I was scared because of all the bad reviews but I loved this class and thought the professor was great. All the assignments are manageable and the exams are not difficult if you study (and they typically include extra credit questions). I found the topic super interesting and really enjoyed going to lecture

A great professor, I really enjoyed her class. Wasn't too interested into biological anthropology but she made it fun. There is one paper but it's not that hard. Her review sessions are really useful as well !

This was one of the easiest lower divs I've taken here. Dr Cartmill is kind and I found the content in the class to be interesting - it's a mixture between linguistics and anthropology, and as someone who has never taken either subject I thought this was a good intro to both.
The class is divided between section participation, midterm, final, and two parts of a final paper, which is explained in section. Lectures are podcasted and slides are posted, which was great because I stopped going to class the second half of the quarter and caught up on everything during finals week. The textbook is not needed to do well in the class but it does have some useful info for cramming. Midterm and final were doable with a couple of cram sessions. Dr. Cartmill is kind, and her study sessions/office hours are useful. She also creates a study guide for both the midterm and final that covers everything on the exams. Definitely recommend for GE/COMM requirements!

not the easiest class but bearable if you put some effort in. lectures are hard to get through but worth going to most of the time. READ THE TEXTBOOK she gets pretty much all her information from the textbook. it was clear the entire quarter professor cartmill didn't super care about the class and the TAs kept complaining how they hadn't heard from her in weeks. there's a mini fieldwork project you have to do that is kinda a pain in the ass but as long as you follow the template you can get an A. if you put in a little effort its a solid A- but you can get an A if you study and do all the extra credit opportunities.

Prof. Cartmill is very knowledgable about the subject material and explains course concepts well. However, she did not take care to assist us taking this class online during a pandemic. Our exams (half short answer, half essay) and homework assignments (transcript notations and short answers) took longer to complete than she said. When the class asked her about it, she complained and was uncompromising about our issues. The course content is very interesting but organization of the class online during a pandemic made it not worthwhile.

Took this class in the middle of a Pandemic and racial injustice protests - mentally this was a tough class to get through. What made it worse is she just seemed to not care. She would give us approximate times it would take to finish an assignment, but would totally miss the mark. For example, she gave us an essay format midterm with short and long answers that was supposed to take 2 hours to complete - the class averaged 8 hours. We sent her an email and she complained about it... but we were supposed to be patient with her posting late lectures. She obviously knows her stuff when it comes to the course and the content was very interesting, but her attitude completely rubbed me the wrong way.
