Prof Deeds does everything to help you succeed and truly just wants everyone to get an A. The midterm and finals were easy (speaking as a math lover), where I aced both with probably like an hour of prep. Compared to Bennoun or however you spell it, it's definitely worth taking 30A with Prof Deeds instead. Labs are the only thing graded on first-try accuracy, otherwise, the homework is on effort and quizzes/pre-class vids give multiple attempts.
Literally the best professor ever. Very accommodating and makes the tests easy.
Funny and helpful teacher, class material is pretty easy to understand and all the tests reflect exactly what we practiced in the homework and lecture, so there's nothing that we're unprepared for
I LOVE ERIC DEEDS! Professor Deeds was definitely my favorite and most memorable professor during my first year. He would always crack random jokes and make lectures really engaging and fun. He would also make an effort to remember as many names as possible during office hours/review sessions and refer to students by their names. When I took the class, he provided iClicker answers after lectures and a bunch of practice questions, which I found useful for preparing for exams. I also felt the exams were pretty fair and very straightforward. Awesome professor--would highly recommend taking him for LS 30A!!!
deeds is the absolute best 30a teacher!!! i unfortunately had to retake 30a as i received a D fall quarter and previously had bennoun which was a nightmare of its own, but deeds' energy and urge to help any and everyone really made this class honestly enjoyable. workload is extremely manageable, midterm allows for corrections up to 1/2 points, homework is graded on completeness. take this class with deeds!!
I had Deeds in Winter 2025 for LS30A and loved him. I was really afraid I wouldn't do well because I generally suck at math, but the content felt decently easy to follow as long as I did my own review and the workload was more than reasonable. I did take calculus in HS (got a 4 on the AB calc exam), so maybe that made this course easier for me as well, but I also know someone that didn't even take calc in HS and got an A, so I think that it is more than manageable to do well in his class regardless of previous calc experience. Overall would definitely take again.
Professor Deeds is a fantastic person and a great professor. His lectures were engaging and easy to follow. There is iClicker for participation. You have learning teams, but sitting with them/working with them in lecture is not necessarily required. If you pay attention and engage, you will do well in this class. Office hours are extremely helpful. All the TAs are well trained and well versed in the topic. If I ever see a another course I need in the future taught by Professor Deeds, I would 100% take it with him.
don’t be swayed by the high reviews. this guy does not give extensions and does not care about the learning curve. he will literally give you an assignment and even the SMALLEST error he will not care and will give you a 0. not even partial credit, just a straight up 0. he is not very good at emphasizing things and expects you to just remember everything. DONT TAKE HIM.
I highly recommend this class to all Computational Biology major. Not only is it easy, but I genuinely learned information beyond what is covered in a textbook. The class is designed by Prof Deeds and Hoffman based on their experience and research in the field. The class consists of weekly homework assignments (9 total with the lowest one dropped) worth 75% of the grade, attendance worth 10% of the grade, and a final project (2-3 page paper + 4 figures) worth 15% of the grade. The grading is VERY easy; even if you don't pay attention in class, the homework takes around 1-2 hours (3 hours max) with little to no coding. The TAs in the class are also very helpful with debugging and the final project. We were also allowed to work in groups for the final project, but everyone had to submit their individual paper. As the grade distribution indicates, this class is a VERY easy A. Overall, I'd highly recommend this class.
I LOVE THIS MAN!! He was so amazing. Understanding, funny, so so engaging, he's passionate about teaching and he seriously really wants you to learn the material and he makes sure it happens. I hate math so much but I made it through his class and actually grew to enjoy some of the math!! His TA staff is also amazing, so competent, and they help him write his exams, so he really does what he can to curate it to the current level of the class. He provides so many practice and preparation opportunities for the midterm and final too! If you have the chance to take with this man you should 1000% do it I love him and miss him all the time
