If you took 107 and 171A with Franco and are looking for an interesting elective to take, 279B is a great option. It’s structured differently than her undergraduate classes - no extra credit for participation, and only 3 HWs. The midterm was straight forward, and even as an undergraduate I found the content approachable. The class teaches you how to create ODE models for biological systems and reactions. Instead of a final exam, the class finishes with a substantial project, tasking you to replicate a paper in the field of Synthetic Biology or come up with your own project - in either case, the projects are simulations and conducted using MATLAB, but you get to prepare both a presentation and your own academic paper. The focus of this class is not to grade you harshly, but rather to learn interesting math, build applicable skills in Synthetic Biology, and gain familiarity in this field. She travels during this quarter for various conferences since she’s so renowned, so you can expect occasional class cancellations with make-up recordings. Professor Franco is the best, and I would definitely take this class again.
