Quarter: Fall 2018
Grade: A
Jan. 24, 2019

I honestly really liked Dr. Blumstein. I usually never write reviews but everyone trashed him on here so here I am. I liked him! You could tell he was obsessed with the subject, no clicker questions or real work for the class. He didn’t text on anything except what we covered in class (I never opened the textbook) and he explained things really well. His think pair shares were really hard at first but if you actually put effort in, you thought about them like a scientist by the end of his half. I actually really enjoyed his half, even if I didn’t love the material. Also his test is all multiple choice! And taken verbatim from the hundreds of lecture questions. The lecture questions were amazing. So hard at first and then you got used to them. I did the like 3x each throughout the quarter and rewrote my notes and that’s really all the studying I did for this class.

The class had weekly quizzes which were very manageable and material pretty much came straight from the weekly lectures. 2 papers which you write with a partner. The grading rubric on those is a little bit tough but nothing crazy. I liked dan’s teaching style and you could tell his lectures were very well thought out. He was also understanding of technological difficulties with COVID and being at home. super lenient about attending discussion, I never really went. Overall, really easy class if you have a busy schedule because everything is asynchronous.

Dr. Blumstein's lectures are engaging and organized. There is no doubt that he is very knowledgeable in this field. The class consists of 8 quizzes (allowed one quiz drop) and two critique papers (midterm+final paper). The weekly quizzes for his Behavior portion were extremely tricky where you had to overthink for some questions while thinking simply on the other questions. The quiz questions were all T/F and you have 30 questions for every weekly quiz (format is Gradescope). You have 2hrs 30 min to solve the quiz and have full access to use CCLE during this time too. The behavior portion of the class really haunted my grade at first but I did so much better on Dr. Fong's ecology section that got me back up to A-. Not much tip for this section... just try your best I guess. It's not like studying more will necessarily raise your grade because the quiz questions are so vague and tricky. Overall, I loved Dr. Blumstein lectures but his quizzes kinda put him off for me.

Taken during online quarter; the entire class was asynchronous, except for optional discussions that I never went to. Tests are a lil rough for Blumstein's portion (behavior) of the class, but the ecology portion's tests should be enough to offset bad scores from this section's test. I got between 60s and 70s on these tests and am ending with an A-.

Midterm/final both consist of reports written with a partner. They're honestly not super bad. Overall, this class had really interesting parts and was a little tough. There was also virtually no work for this class!

Dr. Blumstein is an awesome professor. You can tell he's so passionate about the things he studies. He's also always willing to introduce undergrads to research and have them work on projects. If you're willing to put in the work you can learn so so much from this professor.

Professor Blumstein was overall a pretty good professor. He uses lecture slides, and they were easy to understand and follow along. He also provided us with lots of study questions on CCLE, which was much appreciated. Blumstein is not trying to trick you or make your life difficult. Blumstein took many of the study questions on CCLE and put them on the midterm word-for-word. Most of the midterm consisted of these questions. Seriously, it doesn't get any easier than this. If you did the study questions, you were pretty much set for the midterm. The midterm was also all multiple choice, which I really liked. Overall, a wonderful Professor who is not out to get you.

It's important to note that Blumstein taught the first half the quarter (animal behavior) while Professor Fong taught the second half (ecology). So do keep this in mind when enrolling in EEB 100.

Blumstein made his portion of the class way harder than it needed to be. He was constantly talking about how it's "tricky stuff" when in reality, his midterm was the main thing that tricked people. The subject material is really not that bad. The only reasons I ended up with an A though was because he didn't teach the ecology portion, discussion points were worth a big chunk, and they curved slightly in the end. Overall I thought he was an engaging lecturer but not someone whose class I'd want to be in.

Horrible teacher! He doesn't teach at all and goes very fast. The mean for the animal behavior was 71%. The ecology section was taught by Dr. Fong. She is much better than Dr. Blumstein. His midterm was a nightmare and did not reflect what you learned from animal behavior. Do not take him.

Terrible professor. Managed to completely kill my interest in animal behavior. Doesn't explain things well at all. Much preferred the ecology section.
