Enjoyed the class. If you are not a strong writer, no need to fear. sussman is definitely helpful and is a fun class. I was hesitant about the time of the class,630‐745, but I'm glad I enrolled . The workload is really nothing to worry about
Daniel can be a little boring in class, but other than that, it is a relatively easy class. You have to write summaries to articles you read every week, but he accepts late work and it usually only has to be one page. The workload is fairly easy but can be a hassle if you let it build up. You have to write two essays for this class, which he critiques and hands back for you to write a final draft. Overall, I did not enjoy this class, but it was relatively easy and not stressful.
I really enjoyed English Composition with Mr. Sussman. He is an engaging teacher and he structured our class/assignments around relevant and interesting topics. I would definitely recommend this class, and it is pretty easy to do well.
I am an international student from China. This is my first class at UCLA as a freshman. He gave me lots of personal suggestion during the office hours. The comments for each draft are clear and comprehensive.
We need to read several documents each class. However, he would like to upload all of the materials at the beginning of the semester, so you can arrange your time appropriately.
He is a student-centered professor. If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to talk with him. All in all, he is a perfect instructor.
Professor Sussman is super sweet and makes the class really interesting! There are 2 major papers, and he gives you enough feedback on the first draft so that you can improve the second time. I genuinely enjoyed his class and I think he curved it to make my grade go from an A- to an A! :)
Even though I strongly dislike writing, this class was pretty enjoyable. We only had to write two essays, and the prof gave us helpful feedback and lots of time to complete them. There were also two easy group project presentations, and sometimes we had to write summaries of assigned homework readings.
Prior to taking the class, I didn't know much about the class's subject matter (various topics related to technology/ethics). I enjoyed learning about these topics in addition to improving my writing.
I don't think the fact that the class was all engineers made a big impact on the overall experience, but it was kind of nice to be around people with similar academic goals.
Sussman is a fantastic lecturer. He centered our class around the ethics and philosophy behind machine consciousness, selecting some pretty amazing readings about the subject. They weren't long, but it was paramount to read over them carefully, else you'd be lost in class. He's a hard essay grader, so be prepared to do multiple drafts of each essay, a process he actively helps with.
