Professor Mckenzie is great. He's funny, he's smart, and he's super helpful in dumbing things down so you can understand difficult topics. The other reviews here all vouch for him, as well.

However, echoing the comment of another student, I don't think I learned that much that will stick with me going forward. The tests are extremely easy - he doesn't try to trick you with anything and his homework consists of like at most 10 problems from the textbook that he has handpicked, which are also very easy. Compared to other Math 32A classes, this class is a walk in the park.

Because his tests lack conceptually-based questions, I was simply memorizing the math needed for different types of problems before each midterm/final.

If you are going into a math-heavy field, this class won't help you that much in actually grasping the nitty-gritty concepts. If this class is required, but is one of the only math classes you'll be taking (like it was for me), it's an extremely helpful GPA boost.

Mckenzie was fantastic though - has to be said again.

Mckenzie is the absolute GOAT. His lectures are very well organized and he is always open to clarify questions from anyone. He wants everyone to succeed. He releases PDFs of the homework so no textbook is required. Weekly quizzes in discussion sections are very easy and properly prepare you for the exams. Overall, the exams are easy (occasionally Mckenzie will release a supplementary practice exam prior to the exam date) and there is no real need for a curve. Piazza is the group website Mckenzie uses and creates an extremely easy outlet to get any questions answered from TAs, Mckenzie himself, or other students. Mckenzie is a GREAT professor.

Dr. McKenzie is def the best math teacher / professor I've ever had! I'm a sophomore and this is the first class I've taken to date where I've actually gone to EVERY lecture. I went to his office hours twice and both times talked to him about math and life, and he is super engaging, interesting, and funny! He genuinely cares about his students. Makes you feel like every question & idea is a valid one. I loved his lectures and although the final was kinda hard, it was still very fair. I told him about this whack idea I had relating to math and he gave me really nice & helpful feedback. I think he is extremely smart and is gonna do amazing at ucla :)

Dr. Mckenzie was a great professor! I would definitely take another class if it was taught by him and I definitely recommend him! His lectures were very clear and easy to follow, the pace of the class was just right and manageable, the homework was based on content covered in lecture, and best of all, his tests were very reasonable and based only on topics he covered. There was weekly homework which was not collected, but there were weekly quizzes in discussion which would be a few of that week's homework problems (exactly the same questions!!). The lowest quiz grade would be dropped as well. Although lectures might sometimes be boring--it's math so there's not much that can be done--Dr. Mckenzie always answered questions and taught the foundations as well as provided many examples. I literally do not see why you would not want to take a class with this professor.

His lectures follow along with the textbook and the examples given, so it is extremely easy to understand the content. You can learn it in class then use the textbook to reinforce your understanding.

The homework is a page or two of problems, typed out for you, that you have the week to finish. This makes it extremely easy to time manage, as you can focus on the classes that are more hectic first, before working on Mckenzie's homework. Of course, do not procrastinate on the homework either, as there are quizzes every week during discussion.

Quizzes and midterms and the final are literally based on the homework. The format of the questions are just like they are on the homework, so if you understand every single homework problem and can solve them easily, you will have an easy time in this class.

Mczkenzie rocks!

Professor McKenzie was a good lecturer and presented the course content and expectations very explicitly and clearly. Not too difficult of a class for someone familiar with computer programming and mathematics in general. Additionally, an applicable math course to most all math majors. I would recommend taking this course!

Dr Mckenzie is a great professor! He really takes time to explain every concept and gives a lot of examples to help us understand. Sometimes you may feel the pace is a bit slow but it is always helpful to listen to him and get a better understanding. The workload is really small, and the exams and not tough at all as most of the questions are similar to the hw and quiz questions he gives. Get Dr Mckenzie!

Mckenzie is a pretty chill guy. His lectures are coherent and understandable, and he is clarifying in his answers to questions. One time I didn't understand what he wrote on the board, so I went to ask about it after class. But there were so many people that the next class was starting before I could ask. Mckenzie still welcomed people to ask their questions to him outside 4000A, which I did, and got the answer I was looking for. His drawings of graphs are sometimes hard to make out, but his soothing South African accent makes his lectures flow into the ears of his students like the pouring of a creamy chocolate syrup into uhh.. I don't even know lmao. But like I said, he's a very chill and nice guy, and his class was pretty good, with no major roadblocks or super hard sections. I'd take it again.

McKenzie is kind and friendly with a good sense of humor. He always welcomes questions in class and is usually able to answer them quite effectively. He also brings props to class occasionally like the Hungarian Gomboc to illustrate certain trickier concepts. Homework is optional, but his weekly quizzes are based on the homework. That said, they are pretty easy if you put in some time. His midterms and final are fairly straightforward provided that you show up to most lectures and do well on the weekly quizzes. All in all, McKenzie is one of the most chill professors at UCLA and I would strongly recommend taking his Math 32A.
