Dr. Tomiyama is one of the best professor I had at UCLA. She is not only passionate about health psychology, but she really cares about students' well-being, made several accommodations for pandemic and protests, took students' feedback, and so on. The grade was based on the two exams out of three, so lowest test score gets dropped (which means optional final). She was one of the only professor I had in this quarter who allowed exam to be taken in the 24 hour window instead of having to take at specific time which probably benefited many students who moved back to their home or overseas during pandemic. She also takes out question that about 50% of class gets wrong and curve as well. The tests were made open book and I found test to be extremely clear and straightforward. The class average for test grades were around 94% which probably means it is not just my personal opinion. She also decided to award 3% of extra credit as protests were major concern for some of the students. I really appreciated her enthusiasm and giving engaging lectures that helped me to learn during online instruction!

TAKE THIS CLASS!!! Prof. Tomiyama is adorable, smart, and super generous when it comes to grades. She basically does everything to ensure you get an A. The tests were super easy and there was no homework (besides some really interesting readings). Also, she doesn't make you buy a textbook and the lecture slides are very informational. Not only will you most likely get an A, the material is really cool! Every lecture was engaging. We learned about pain, the placebo effect, stress, mindfulness, etc. I would absolutely recommend this class to anyone.

First of all, gotta get this out of the way but PROFESSOR TOMIYAMA IS THE MOST AMAZING HUMAN IN UCLA THANKS.
She made health psych so interesting and her articles that she asks us to read are so relevant and applicable to daily life as she often updates them to reflect the most current climates in society.
She's also super helpful as if you're unsure about anything, you can ask on the discussion board or after class on zoom and she will make sure you leave with full understanding.
The tests were best 2 out of 3 tests, 50 questions each. She would give out a poll over zoom to gauge how many % of multiple-choice questions, matching, true/false etc that ya'll prefer and then she'll tailor the tests from there to your liking.
The test is open book open note and is open for a full 24 hours but once started, you'd have to finish it in the allotted 75 minutes. For the first test, she had the option to not let us go back enabled which didn't bother me much but a lot of people found it difficult and stressful so she removed that restriction. She's VERY open to discussions about how to make the whole situation better for anyone and her curve will always help you instead of hurt you in any way.
Just make sure to get a general gist of the articles assigned and listen to the lecture (I like to do it real-time over zoom just because there are fewer distractions) but she podcasts every lecture too.

Anyways, take this class, you won't regret it and you'll get to hear about some of her interesting research at the diSH lab!!

Professor Tomiyama is one of the best professors that I have had at UCLA. She is passionate about health psychology and is always open to helping students. Her main goal is to educate students, instead of trying to trick them into failing. The exams are not difficult if you study the lectures and understand the studies talked about in class. I highly recommend everyone taking this class with Tomiyama if you want to take an interesting and light workload.

Professor Tomiyama is straightforward and is skilled at structuring and running this class. I would highly recommend this class because the material was pretty interesting and the assignments and readings are very doable. She does require iClickers and has iClicker questions every lecture. The class is structured so that there are three exams and the lowest exam score is dropped, so a good amount of students did well enough on the first two exams and didn't have to stay for the final during finals week.

I enjoyed Prof Tomiyama's class even though I am not very interested in health psych. There's a lot to learn and I found a lot of the content to be useful in life. I would say that the exams are not as easy as they seem in these reviews. They weren't ridiculous but they're all application questions and half are specific details from the readings. Luckily they're open note and she drops the the questions that most people get wrong so it's definitely doable. I would definitely recommend the class if you're interested.

1. Professor Tomiyama is very intelligent, poised, and passionate. I respect her very much. Her lectures are engaging and relevant to everyday life; I recommend everyone take this class, even if they are not a Psychology major. Regarding note-taking, her lectures are not entirely clear and seem to jump around a lot, but it is not unbearable as she allows many questions and clarifies any confusion. She is very engaged with her students and attempted to learn all of our names (which is super awesome). She cares about our learning experience; she has the class vote on their preferred testing formats and then compiles the tests to mirror the class distribution (e.g., 5% of the test is true/false, 25% is multiple choice, etc.). The homework assignments are very interesting and have a lot of value to them. They are also very reasonable (there are only 2). However, I wish each one was worth a little more than 2.5% because I feel they are more reflective of knowledge than the exams (to some extent), which take up 93% of the grade (yeah). Overall, the professor cares about her students, teaches well, takes into account our thoughts, and is a great representation of what a professor should be like. I loved her and I would totally take her again.

easily one of the most interesting psych classes I've taken. there's 3 exams total and the top 2 are taken. I would say the exams are a little tricky just because they're all application based questions and you don't have a practice or study guide going into it, but I rewatched all the lectures before the exams and was able to only take the first two exams. this meant the course practically ended in week 7 for me since I turned in the additional assignment early. there's two writing assignments that are the same prompt and one-page requirement each; you basically find an article online about a topic related to health psychology and summarize and critique it. prof tomiyama also offers a percent of extra credit for doing sona studies!

Take this class! Dr. T is an excellent lecturer, her class is well organized, and she cares about the success of her students. There is not textbook, she assigns interesting articles that are FREE, best 2 out of 3 exams and 2 short writing assignments. Extra credit for Sono participation. This was a genuinely enjoyable class. If you aren't sure how interested you are in working in health psych, take this class anyway for the interesting content and with a professor who cares about learning. The class isn't designed to be stressful it's designed for you to get invested in the topics and want to learn more.
