I took this class because I needed PSYCH10A as a pre req but halfway through the quarter I no longer needed it, but I still stuck around. Point is, even though that class wasn’t needed I still really found the content interesting & was my favorite class this quarter. She is really CLEAR and her lecture slides are always posted. ALTHOUGH, I took notes on a laptop during lecture & then hand wrote them afterwards to understand and go over content, and it really helped a lot. She was very accommodating as her lectures were recorded and posted online so it was very helpful. She seems very passionate about this topic , which is why I think I enjoyed it so much. I wish my major and her classes intersected more because she’s probably my top fav professors. The pace is not too slow nor too fast, and the grade is FAIRLY distributed.
I personally don’t like when grades are literally half midterms & a final. She distributed the grade as follows:
-15% quizzes on bruinlearn (which were fairly easy if you pay attention)
- 6% article analyses
- labs 15% (which were easy & some were in groups)
- mini assignments 3% (again fairly easy and light workload)
- 14%: survey& experimental lab reports:
- 17% midterm
- 30% final
I got basically got majority/full credit on the assignments & quizzes. On the midterm I got an B. Final a B- & was able to finish the course with an A-.
The interesting part of this class was the SONA research credit requirement. You basically participate in UCLA studies and you get credits :) you schedule your studies around your schedule so you do it during your time before the end of the quarter (she gives a specific date)
Sorry for the lengthy review, but I wanted to thoroughly touch on every part of this class. She was a very engaging professor & I really enjoyed her class! Take this class with Professor Ankowski if you can!
The class was relatively easy and stuck to the same routine all quarter, which I liked. I came in which no prior knowledge of Psychology but if you took AP Psych, this class is perfect for you. I enjoyed Ankwoski because attendance was not mandatory, she provided a free pdf textbook which I never read and ALL the tested information is given on the slides. I will say GO TO CLASS! A majority of the content on the midterm and final was based on class lectures, and labs which is why I ended with a B because I never attended lectures and bombed the final. Overall, this class is easy as long as you apply yourself.
Dr. Ankowski was very knowledgable and made her expectations for the course very clear. The labs were sometimes graded particularly, but overall the class is very manageble. I really enjoyed the lectures and found them very interesting. The quizzes were also very helpful to understand how the midterm formate would be.
Ankowski knows what she is talking about. When it comes to the way she teaches is that she uses a slideshow and basically reads off of them and adds on when needed. She does iClicker and she does this for participation points. When it comes to exams, they aren't too bad but please KNOW your terms and MEMORIZE the importance of Experiments. She gives a few extra credit points but nothing that can bump you a letter grade.
If you've taken AP Psychology, this class would be a least of your worry, and if you haven't it is easy to still follow along.
I really enjoyed the topics of introductory psych, but I do not feel that Prof Ankowski prepared us for the midterm and final. She would spend lots of time in class talking about topics, but left out MANY things that were on the midterm and final. All of the things she left out are covered in the textbook so be sure to read it as part of your review/after lectures so you understand all the necessary content. Apart from that, the labs and quizzes are easy to complete as long as you devote some time to working on them.
The class is split up into these categories:
- Quizzes on bruin learn 8% (unlimited attempts)
- In-class participation 7% (iclicker)
- Labs 18% (also in-class)
- Survey and experimental labs 12% (outside of class and with a group)
- Midterm 22% (individual section worth most of grade and group section worth smaller part
- Final 32%
Dr. Ankowski made this class super interesting and engaging. She's really silly and has a comforting aura to her sorry idk how else to put it lolllolol. Lectures are recorded, i found the labs pretty easy (we mostly did group labs). the midterm consisted of mcq questions, some saq's, and the 2nd part of the midterm was a group exam which had the exact same questions that were on the mcq's but this time you answer it as a group. That saved my midterm score although it was only worth about 2% of the midterm itself... overall, she made this class super interesting and i would just recommend memorizing the terms and something that helped me a lot was applying what we learn to real life, I got soooo annoying with my friends but considering that i suck at studying, this "method" worked the best for me.
This is an easy class in my opinion. Ankowski is a great lecturer and even though I had her at 8am, I still found myself able to engage with the material during class. She gives a bank of questions to review before the midterm and final which are very helpful. Would highly recommend this class and professor!
This class was pretty good overall. It covered lots of different topics within psychology which was helpful to see what parts of psychology you may want to learn further (if you want to do research, etc.). That being said, because it was an introductory course and didn't have much depth, it was a little boring. Professor Ankowski did use videos and different fun self-tests throughout lectures to make it more interesting. I thought the midterms and finals were very reasonable and although there was a lot of content to memorize, the questions weren't actually that difficult. The grading was a nice balance of iClicker participation, weekly lab reports (not bad), and exams. I would recommend this class with Ankowski if you are considering taking it.
Very well organized class. Clear, engaging lectures. This class provides all the resources you need to do well. She provides course outlines for each lecture which are basically like pre made notes. Those outlines had everything on the slides, so it was very useful to use the outlines instead of rewriting what was on the presentation. During class, I annotated those premade outlines with examples/other things she said during lecture. She also has a test bank with psych questions. V v useful!
My only complaint is that sometimes I felt like the TAs were a bit picky with the lab worksheets and took off unnecessary points. Try to go to office hours for each worksheet/report just to make sure you have your shtuff set.
Overall, I really enjoyed Dr. Ankowski's class!
She takes attendance on iClicker and it is an 8 am so take it at your own risk. Lowkey the exam had nt to do with what we learned so it was pretty hard the TA’s are soooo picky with their grading I don’t think I got a single lab with full points it was always 19/20 9/10 never full there’s not a lot of extra credit and the final is 32% of your grade so if ur a bad exam taker (like me) goodluck🤗. Amber is super sweet herself the course was just ugh
