Quarter: Fall 2019

OVERALL I think this class is pretty easy, considering the fact that there is no midterm, just a paper that she tells you about very much in advance. Although, I didn't take that opportunity to start on the paper earlier which is why I got an 85% by busting ass two days before and going to the writing center for help--which helped me a lot and which I HIGHLY recommend for everyone to get help on their paper. Yes, her quizzes are a pain in the ass with the wording and require you to really study the readings in detail, as well as pay attention to concepts she explains more in-depth than what is on the slides, but I guess I enjoyed it. However, I kinda got bored of the material as time went on in the class, like another person said on here, the material you learn isn't necessarily ground-breaking or something you haven't heard of before.

I did not realize how much I loved this class until I left it :( Everyday I would walk in to her lecture captivated by what she had prepared for us. Her class is one that is deeply tied to the workings of social life; so, nothing about the readings or lecture felt meaningless. If I had to give some tips to someone who wanted to take this class, I would say that you ought to do ALL the readings and attend ALL the lectures. You really would be missing out on a lot of important material that pops up on the quizzes. I really do not feel like the quizzes are tricky. If you do all the readings, you probably won't have any issue (beyond like maybe one question) in doing them. Also, the empirical essay is a high-stakes assignment and your success on it is heavily dependent upon your understanding of the readings. So, for your own sake, please do the readings! It also will make the final easier for you (which is a cumulative multiple choice test with a long essay portion). This is such an amazing class!!!!!! TAKE IT!

Professor Saguy is so sweet! Her class consisted of 3 quizzes (1 gets dropped), an empirical essay, and a final! She also has some extra credit and other miscellaneous points that she gives! Overall, she is very sweet and passionate about the subject, but the quizzes can be very tricky and she, as well as her TA's, do expect a lot from us. The empirical essay must be VERY well written. I got a 95% on it, but mainly because I was working on it for a month, whereas most students finished typing the essay the day of. There is A LOT of reading and don't even skip one!!!! They are all important in some way! Don't be scared about these comments on bruin walk. I was terrified of this class because of the comments on here, but overall it is not bad as long as you talk to your TA and you work hard! :)

One of the most interesting and engaging classes I've taken at UCLA. I highly recommend this class if you're at all interested in the subject matter. However, this is definitely not an easy A class. There is a lot of reading and the professor and TAs do grade relatively hard. Her lecture powerpoint slides and the TA discussion sections go over the readings for most part, so I wouldn't say you necessarily have to do all the readings. She does have really tricky and difficult multiple choice questions on her quizzes and tests that can trip you up if you didn't pay attention to her lecture slides in class or do the reading yourself. Overall, super interesting and if you go to class, pay attention to her slides, and participate in section, you should have no issue getting at least a B.

As a 4th year, this was literally the best class I've taken at UCLA. Professor Saguy is so passionate about the topic of gender and has done so much research on it that her lectures are filled with incredible information and makes you much more aware of everything that surrounds you. This is probably the only class I have ever looked forward to going to, and I actually did the readings and enjoyed them.
Guys might want to steer clear, it's a little feminist but she portrays it in a very unbiased way, but just a warning it's probably more of a class for women.

There are 3 quizzes spread throughout the quarter that are multiple choice, one of which is dropped at the end so you keep your two highest grades. One empirical research paper and a final - no midterm.
I SERIOUSLY reccommend taking this class with Saguy you will learn so much.

This is my favorite class I've taken at UCLA and Saguy is one of the best professors I've had. The subject material was extremely interesting & enlightening. I love that she focuses so much on intersectionality and connects gender to race, sexual orientation, body size, etc. Saguy makes a huge effort to engage students in class and actually learned the names of everyone who participated in lecture. She is a very organized lecturer who uses clear, eye-pleasing PowerPoints and included several guest lecturers & films in the class. She is a challenging grader but if you are interested and engaged in the material (and take advantage of extra credit opportunities), you can succeed in the class (I got an A!). I highly recommend taking this class with her--you will LOVE it!

I highly reccomend taking this class. You learn a lot about the subject matter and the lectures a really interesting.
There is a ton of reading to do though and if you dont keep up with it you will find yourself in a panic trying to get through it all before the midterm and final. There is atleast one question from every reading on either exam.So make sure to read or atleast skim ALL the readings.
Saguy is a very difficult grader and has high standards for her classes but the class is doable if you put in the effort. I ended up with a A- but i think the majortiy of the class got Bs.
The lectures are engaging and she constantly gives students the opportunity to make comments and ask questions.
If you keep up with the readings, keep clear communiation with the T.As and actually enjoy the topic of gender, you will learn a lot and should do well in the class.
