Exceptional Exclusion: Asian American Dance from 1930s to 1960s

Description: (Same as Asian American Studies M98T.) Seminar, four hours. Enforced requisite: satisfaction of Entry-Level Writing requirement. Freshmen/sophomores preferred. Examination of Asian American dancers and choreographers from 1930s to 1960s performing in popular, commercial, Asian heritage, and American modern dance. Discussion of concepts of Orientalism, racial uplift, and exceptionalism to contend with how Asian bodies performed their otherness and excellence as means to critique and conform to notions of citizenship. Letter grading.
