Most Helpful Review
Spring 2025 - I loved my class with Dr. Guerin. It's one of the only (if not the only) class I've taken at UCLA that was truly interdisciplinary. We practiced in all learning modalities: we did movement based exercises, sound and field recordings, made films, wrote poetry, and had great class discussions based on the readings. The reading material Dr. Guerin provided was phenomenal. I will be saving this reading list and using it for years to come. I especially appreciated how the list was made up of scholars from multiple disciplines, with a heavy emphasis on decolonial works, somatic texts, disability studies texts, ecological studies texts, and texts by artists. She also brought in several scholars and artists working in mediums relevant to our discussions in class, which was helpful because then we got to see how people in the field put the ideas we discussed in class into practice on a practical, actionable level. I loved how collaborative the class was. Dr. Guerin emphasizes community and collaboration in her teaching and in her practice. She's flexible and listens when students are going through something outside of class. For instance, I got very ill during the quarter and she checked in on me, which I very much appreciated. Her syllabus spelled out for us the frame work that we'd be using in the class and what would be expected of us, and then she followed through on that framework while also allowing for flexibility and accommodation of what we were interested in discussing. My favorite thing about Dr. Guerin's classes is that students get to pursue somatics, ecology, decolonial studies, and practice-based research all in one. I will definitely be taking her classes again in the future if I get the chance. Don't miss out on your opportunity to study with her!
