Variable Topics Research Seminars: Sociology
Description: Seminar, three hours. Limited to juniors/seniors. Study of selected topics of sociological interest. Reading, discussion, and development of culminating project. Consult Schedule of Classes for topics and instructors. May be repeated for credit and may be applied as elective units toward Sociology major. Letter grading.

Spring 2025 - Topic was ultra-processed foods and cosmetics. We used the UCLA archives and focused on food technology advertisements from the 1950's onwards. This class was pretty straight forward and the professor was always willing to help. The main goal of the class was to produce a 10-15pg research paper using the archives on our chosen topic. The professor outlined what was due each week and had us do it in chunks so we weren't overwhelmed when the final due date came. She also had us submit a first draft so she could give us a lot of feedback since it was a small class (20 people). There were some readings towards the beginning of the quarter but by the end we were mostly focused on the paper. We also did a 10 minute presentation on our paper that everyone did well on. Professor doesn't give A+'s in this class (even if you get above 97%) which she doesn't tell you in advance but isn't that big of a deal. I would definitely take another class with her! She is very passionate about the topic and provides extra resources to help with everyone's chosen topic!
