Fall 2025 - While the material and readings themselves are not the most difficult to understand, his expectations for your understanding are difficult to meet. His slides consist of block quotes from the readings, and rather than expanding on why the quote is important, he reads it in its entirety and tests you on your understanding of the quote (without noting the relevance of it to the theories you're trying to learn). For commuters, he often ends lecture early, the earliest being by 45 minutes, but he still requires you show up to answer iClicker questions and mark your attendance. His attendance requirements would not be outrageous if not for the uselessness of his lectures and the amount of time it takes to finish them. If you want to do well in this class, I cannot stress enough that the TAs will be a major crutch. Their discussions are 100% more helpful than his lectures, and, unlike him, they actually want you to succeed in the class. Best of luck if you take this professor.

Winter 2024 - Professor Ayala reads pretty much verbatim off of the same slides that he's been reusing the past nine years that he's been teaching this class. He is neither an engaging or accommodating professor, and it's clear that he's looking forward to retirement. He is rather apathetic when it comes to responding to emails, and I didn't really get the sense that he wanted his students to succeed in his class. The TA's 100% carried when it came to picking apart the readings and lectures, and giving us the materials in a study-able format. The only good thing about him is that he inputted final grades in quickly, and was somewhat nice in the last week. I would recommend taking this class from another teacher if you can.

Spring 2016 - Bargheer is so nice! The class has lots of readings since you read older works of Sociology. I got an A- for the class when I thought I was getting a B. Grades on: 3 Pop Quizzes (They are easy and won't hurt you), Midterm (In Class, 2 short ssays) and Final (Take Home, two 5 Page Essays). The readings can get difficult but the TA's will help you understand them. I think my TA was a rough grader cause I think I deserved better grades from the midterm and final lol. Take this class with Bargheer or Jepson! I hear both are good . PLFs help too if you are in AAP! I am a first year and I would recommend this class (Remember that I got an A-). I did not stress much about the class tbh

Fall 2020 - I had max for soc 102 and omg I hope I never have him again. He's so passive aggressive. He's a lot nicer during office hours but even then he makes me uncomfortable when asking questions because I thought he would explode. Him and Jepson (Soc 102 prof) together were horrible.

Summer 2020 - Professor Duran is such a great professor. The readings are so confusing but he clears everything up in lecture and makes the subjects easy to understand. His exams are super hard but all of the questions are taken out of lecture. His exams consist of multiple choice and a long answer section. Overall this class is doable and you will learn so much.
