Biomedical, Social, and Policy Frontiers in Human Aging
Description: (Same as Gerontology M108 and Public Affairs M130.) Lecture, four hours. Limited to juniors/seniors. Course of human aging charted in ways that are based on variety of recent research frontiers. Use of conceptual frameworks to increase relevance of aging to students' lives and enhance their critical thinking--biopsychosocial approach that is based on recognition that aging is inherently interdisciplinary phenomenon, and life course perspective that is distinguished by analytical framework it provides for understanding interplay between human lives and changing social structures, and allows students to understand how events, successes, and losses at one stage of life can have important effects later in life. Focus on individuals as they age within one particular sociohistorical context. Letter grading.

Fall 2017 - Professor LLS is constantly late to class. She often has other professors lecture for her. Her slides are very outdated, and she borrows material heavily from her GE Cluster course. The textbook is dry and redundant to the lectures. Exams are part comprehension and part opinion. You have to remember her remarks from lectures to make sure that you have her opinion for all questions. Overall, for classwork, there are too many assignments. Reading assignments could be updated to be more modern and reflect current issues in healthcare. For projects and essays, there is a lot of busy work. You are assigned 2 short essays and 1 long interview/essay. Additionally, there are debates in week 8 and week 9. I would not recommend this class or the professor.
