Classroom Practices in Elementary School Science

Description: Seminar, 90 minutes; fieldwork, three hours per week for eight weeks. Introduction for prospective science teachers to field of elementary education and teaching and learning of science in elementary school classrooms. Pairs of students are placed in local elementary school classrooms to observe, participate, and assist mentor teachers in instruction. Introduction to inquiry-based learning practices, national and California standards, reading and learning differences in children, and cognitive ability of elementary-age children as it relates to introduction of concepts, curricular planning, classroom management, and learning assessment. P/NP grading.
