Spring 2025 - I really enjoyed this class! Prof Stein's lectures were engaging and I always felt like I learned a lot. His slides are pretty thorough and he elaborates with anecdotes that help with retaining content. The first 5 weeks of class leading up to the midterm, it is VERY important to do the readings. The midterm is 4 in class essays where you need to make certain arguments based on the readings. You can pick 4 out of 8 prompts, but it is essential to cite the readings, so be sure to be familiar with a good handful of readings so you can do well! After week 5/midterm the readings are helpful to supplement content, but you won't be tested any more on them. After this, attendance dropped off, and though it isn't required, definitely still attend! Prof Stein is super knowledgeable and the classes are very interesting and relevant to today. The final was a 15 page research paper on a topic of your choosing. You have basically the whole quarter to do this. I highly recommend this class. Though the readings are pretty hefty (160ish pages a week), I learned a lot and the second half of the quarter was more manageable workload wise.
