Summer 2025 - Love this professor. Best math professor i've ever had. Not sure why his 170E class is not posted as that is what this review is going to be about not 170S. This dude was really down to earth, funny, had shared my weird obession for star wars, sci fi, and fantasy for some reason. Dude was really intelligent had a great sense of humor, very responsive on email, and managed to help me succeed in 32b (i had to repeat the class but the amount of overall from 170e to 32b I think is going to save me). This dude was very helpful, homework problems were really challenging but prepared us well for the exams. Exams were pretty hard but he did let you use all your notes which was pretty nice if they were handwritten (not sure if he does that during a regular quarter probably not). textbook is always written very well in my opinion and was extremely helpful in succeeding in this class. Now i'm in 170s and hating my teacher and missing the 170e days.

Summer 2025 - Hubeyb is a peculiar guy, he’s not necessarily a great professor but that’s the same as like half of the profs in the math department. Homework is given but not graded, only meant to help for studying for the tests and quizzes. The course is graded from 4 quizzes, with the lowest one dropped, the midterm, and final. The quizzes are 10% each, with the midterm and final having a 30/40 split, with the one you performed on better being the 40%. The midterm was relatively what was expected, basically the exact material that you’d expect. The final was MUCH more difficult however. The reviews that were written previously are entirely accurate. Brush up on your 170E material, he loves testing Gamma, exponential, and Poisson distributions. We were also for some reason had a question on chi-squared testing for the final. Ordinarily I would think it’s ok but in this case we learnt the entirety of it in the last lecture day, 2 days before the final. Overall if you have Hubeyb you’ll be fine, but I wouldn’t sing the most praises.

Spring 2024 - I often got lost in the lectures and found them very hard to follow. He posts his notes but I found those confusing as well (and so have other people in the class). I feel like he didn't give us enough homework and he ended up testing us on things that we've never even practiced. Since his lectures were confusing and we barely got any homework I wasn't really sure what to study for the final. *He only gave us three homeworks for the entire quarter (each consisting of 5-6 questions). He's a very nice guy and will try to help you if you ask but I just felt like we didn't get enough practice so I was lost for most of the quarter.

Fall 2020 - After reading all those "great" reviews for this professor, I thought its a good choice to take Math 170S as one of my elective class, but I can't describe how awful this class was. Imagine someone just reads you the lecture note pdf that is already uploaded, word by word in slow motion and leaving the questions unsolved, then having a quiz every other week which takes so much time with only 2hr limit time. (Btw if you f*ckup your midterm, quizzes will worth 50% of your grade so really be careful on quizzes). Finally both midterm and final was the worst and impossible to pass since the instructor will be grading it himself with absolutely no partials. My advise: This class is far away from being easy and useful, so don't waste your time on taking Math 170S with LYU and try whole quarter to pass the class, either take someone else or ovoid probability and stats.
