Great professor who is really passionate about the subject! Since this was an 8am and I am not a morning person, focusing in class was sometimes a little hard. However, the professor did try to engage the class during lectures. Her slides are very helpful, and have a lot of problems to practice for the quizzes and exams. This is important because methods that the textbook and the study guide associated with it use don't always match up with her methods.
Her quizzes and exams are very do-able as long as you've been keeping up with the weekly homework. She also gives up to 3% extra credit for doing SONA studies.
Also, Alex is a great TA. His discussion section and office hours were very helpful and fun.

I'm a little surprised by the bad reviews, she wasn't bad at all. The lectures were pretty slow and she always took the time to answer every student's questions (even annoying ones). I actually really enjoyed her as a professor, she tried to make the class interactive.

I've heard a lot of bad things about this course and if you're reading these reviews thinking it's not for you, I definitely encourage you to just try the class for yourself. I'm glad I went into the class not knowing anything because I came into the class not expecting it to be terrible and it turned out to be so interesting that I decided to double-major in Ling.

I will say that while the homework and quizzes were do-able, the final was ridic. But it was open book and open note.

My TA was pretty much useless, by the way.

Professor's lecture are dry, difficult to pay attention in class. However, course materials were organized and his lecture slides were very helpful. Weekly homeworks take a ton of time to do, and the answers that the professor is looking for is super specific. It is difficult to not get a ton of points marked off on the homeworks. I also believe that the textbook should not be required for this class. The professor always makes a bunch of edits that override the information found in the textbook, thereby causing a lot of confusion to me and other students.

Something to watch out for this class: the professor provides a digital copy of the textbook for free at the start of the class, don't go buy the textbook at the bookstore because it is a waste of money and is actually a different textbook, IDK why they even have it there still on the shelf. For the class itself, sit near the front because its easy to miss something the professor says because she can be too quiet sometimes. The class is trickier than you might think and for those that are Ling. majors out there who think they already know a lot don't make the mistake of slacking off because the class is mostly about the formal representations of different structures in linguistics and is actually quite tricky. Overall she is a very helpful professor and the class isn't too hard as long as you pay attention from the very beginning.

Honestly didn't expect to like Professor Smith as much as I did—initially, he makes it seem like the class will be extremely difficult and that he'll be a stickler about everything, but that isn't the case. He's really friendly, has a great sense of humor and sarcasm (not everyone gets it, but he's a funny guy), and really seems to care that we learn the material.
A lot of the teaching can seem hand-wavy in the first half the class because this is just an intro class, but he does his best to explain things without getting overly complicated.
The class does cover a *lot* of material, but Professor Smith did a good job of connecting back to old material when relevant.
Really enjoyed the class and I hope to take another linguistics class with the professor.

Weekly homework + quizzes in discussion (and the occasional lecture quiz), but only the top 10 quizzes count. Homework is sometimes difficult but not unmanageable; same with quizzes.
He makes the class sound a lot harder than it will be (just check the grade distribution!)

Also high recommendation for Adeline as your TA if she's an option!
