Fall 2025 - Brenda is such a great teacher! She gives really helpful feedback and the class is very doable. We have a contract grading system, so essentially if you fulfill all the requirements (go to OH before essay is due, write x pages, turn it in on time), you’re guaranteed an A on the essay. We had two essays, one 4-5 pages, and one 8-9 pages (could be expansion of the first one). We did a unit on fiction, one on poetry, and one on film. Participation also matters, but you get two excused absences. This is a great class to fulfill your writing 2 requirement so definitely take it with Brenda if you get the chance to!

Winter 2020 - Tony is the best!!! He's so supportive of his students and encourages growth over anything else. He's a great grader for essays, always gives totally fair grades that encourage you to try. However, his comments on every single essay are helpful and wonderfully guided and give so much to work off of for the next papers. The course material is so interesting, he explores different ways history is told in fiction, nonfiction, and theory. This is the best class I have taken at UCLA so far, and it's largely because of Tony. He's so inviting, and I wish I could take another class with him.
