Description: Lecture, three hours. Examination of major texts in history of critical theory and interpretation from pre-Socratics to Descartes, including classical literary criticism (Plato, Aristotle, Horace, Longinus), biblical hermeneutics (Bible, Midrash, St. Paul, St. Augustine, St. Thomas Aquinas), and medieval and Renaissance theories of interpretation (Dante, Boccaccio, Sidney). S/U or letter grading.
