Description: (Formerly numbered Chicana and Chicano Studies 143B.) Lecture, four hours; discussion, one hour (when scheduled). Focus on Afro-Latina/o experience in U.S. through exploration of its historical roots and contemporary forms. How colorism in Latin America and U.S. influence Afro-Latina/o identity. Regional differences and different types of Afro-Latina/os that include Blaxicans, Nuyoricans, Afro-Cubans, and others are taken into account. Discussion of themes that include feminism, politics, culture, music, and identities in order to obtain comprehensive picture of Afro-Latina/os in U.S. yesterday and today. P/NP or letter grading.
