Description: Lecture, three hours. Requisite: course C223A. Introduction to Coptic, final phase of Egyptian language, which is attested in writing from circa 300 to 1400 CE. Introduction to variety of Coptic textual genres, from hagiographies to homilies, magical spells, private letters, legal contracts, and Gnostic Gospels found in Nag Hammadi. Readings in texts in dialects other than Sahidic (Bohairic, Fayumic, Akhmimic). Concurrently scheduled with course C123B. S/U or letter grading.
