3 exempt speeches, one impromptu, a final paper, and a research paper. Lots of work required but lots of extra credit also given. Selling textbook hardcover which is needed for the 24 page final paper. Email: *************

The teacher of this class is one of my favorites I have had at UCLA. The class is a great place for discussion. I have found that I learn a lot but I am brought no stress from this class. I genuinely look forward to going and learning the material

DO. NOT. TAKE. COMM 1 WITH MILLER. This man consistently loses over half of the classes' assignments despite all of us resending all of them THROUGH EMAIL multiple times. His voice is also extremely difficult to understand and listen to in general. He sometimes makes jokes with misogynistic and racist undertones and is overall unbearably annoying to interact with, even on zoom.

Pretty horrible instructor. No offense, but in my opinion he is too old to be teaching at this point. The syllabus had written certain dates that things were due and then the week before he changed them to be due earlier (midterm). He barely responded to emails and was honestly pretty rude in attempt to be funny. I would never recommend this class to anyone. He also assigned a total of 80+ pages throughout the quarter. What a waste of paper because it was all busy work.

This class was honestly super disorganized and difficult to follow. The class did not follow the syllabus at all and Prof Miller threw arbitrary deadlines at us every week. We ended up with a 12 pg paper and a 24 pg paper due on the same day because he was so behind on coursework. We also got very little instruction on any of our assignments, how to conduct proper speeches, and he often got irritated at us when we asked questions about what he wanted. I also found his jokes very rude, distasteful, and personally directed towards students at many points.

This class is easy, but it's a lot of busy work.
You'll have to do journals, 3 pages each, 12 journals total over the whole quarter, but prof requires Arial 14-pt font so it's easy.

You'll do one debate. it isn't that bad, work with your partner and it'll be fine. you can reference his other debates on the same exact topic on youtube if you get lost. you'll basically spend 4+ weeks in this class watching debates and writing a couple sentences on who you thought won and why on ccle.

The class size is small so you get to know everyone, which takes away the pressure of talking in front of everyone.

Midterm and final are 10% and the answers can always be found in the online textbook that he provides for free on ccle. they're take home.

2 speeches towards the end of the quarter, like 2 mins. easy. basically on what you learned.

overall, would take again, is a GPA booster, gives out extra credit a lot, curves the class, just a lot of busy work esp. towards the end of the quarter, but a ton of it you can do early and not worry about it again.

DO NOT TAKE!!!!
NO instruction on how to do speeches, had to be prepared every class to do a speech despite not having instruction. 24 page midterm, 10+ page brief that had nothing to do with the class...
The only thing that made this class bearable was the lady who would assist the prof. She tried to help.

I have not received my grade for this class yet as I am still taking this course, but I will update my grade once I have received it. I REPEAT DO NOT TAKE THIS COURSE WITH THIS PROFESSOR. First, I'll talk about the content of this course. Since it is during summer session, we only have about 6 weeks to have lectures, etc. We are supposed to complete/deliver 5 speeches, but because he takes so much time critiquing each student, we were incredibly behind on the course material. When he critiques your speech, he doesn't send you any sort of rubric or evaluation on what you did wrong or even how you can improve. He's very particular and picky and wants everything to be done a certain way, and if you stray from his "model", he will continuously remind you. He is very condescending to his students and often makes borderline sexist and misogynistic remarks. He is very rude and I did not enjoy this course at all. He also somehow manages to lose all of our assignments even when we email them to him as he asks. The class is very disorganized and there really is no structure to it. The only positive thing about this class was the students in it.
