Professor Tenhouten is best suited for students who are going to take an interest in the subject matter, his research, and all the content related to the class. If you are not going to really be motivated in his class THEN DO NOT TAKE IT.
The reading can be a bit lengthy, but if you go to class then you will have a better time on the midterm and final.

Exams
The exams are curved. If you study and PAY CLOSE ATTENTION TO DETAIL you will do well-- without a doubt.

Papers
Put effort into your paper and try to do a topic that is both outside of the box and related to the class and YOU WILL DO WELL.

Lectures
They can be a bit dry... I personally found him funny, but not everyone may feel that way. Go to class everyday because he DOES take attendance and the lecture material will be on the exams.

Overall
He is one of those professors that you either love or hate. Don't expect a lot of hand-holding because he does NOT do that.

The worst class ever! Tenhouten is unreasonable, rude and totally full of himself. His exams are ridiculous multiple choice questions and has a 12 page paper which he doenst even read. Has a dry sense of humor and his study of the Austrailian Aborigines is all he freaking talks about! He is horrible with emails. He will tell you that he will email you back if he feels like it! Do not take his class. The topic couldnt be more boring.

i thought that the material is interesting but absolutely hated the class because i absolutely hated tenhouten. He will under NO circumstances let you skip a class- if you're an athlete forget about taking it cuz going to a game/meet is NOT an excuse. He is not concerned about the student at all and is the most arogant person i've ever met.

I think Professor TenHouten's class is actually really interesting. Sure, he can be a bit dry in lecture, but he is definitely passionate about the study of emotions. His reading is by FAR the least amount of reading I've had to do at UCLA and is surprisingly interesting. (and its only $12!) Unfortunately, he did assign two 8-10 page papers AND gave a midterm and final (both multiple choice), which occured very close together in time. For the papers, he required abstracts, separate disks, and envelopes--all that jazz. However, the topics for the essays were pretty open-ended, but extremely tedious. True, he does take attendance and if you miss class, points are deducted. He also tends to get angry is you leave class--even to go to the restroom! Overall, class is pretty doable..just dont lag on those papers.

Forget about all the other reviews before this one...Professor TenHouten is a changed man and not for the better! His class consists of a midterm, final, and TWO term papers (10 pages in length each)! He even has assigned seating! Who has assigned seating in college?! And he is an incredibly paranoid man...he thinks that every student is taking advantage of him. He does not have trust in anyone. I definetely do not recommend him. Do not make the same mistake that I made. He does not give extra credit (so far at least it seems) and he is not concerend about the student.

The sociology of emotions class was very interesting. I learned so much in his class. He is also a very nice and helpful professor. The tests are mulitple choice and there's one paper to write. I got an A in his class and I thought the materials were not difficult at all. He even gives extra credit! He seems very passionate about his own research and studies, which is very cool. His lectures are organized and he also posts the notes on class web site which was very helpful too. Overall he is a great professor.

TenHouten's class is awesome!! I learned so much about the emotions. wow. definately a must take at UCLA.
I had to go to class becaue he would take roll, but his lectures are good because they're everythign you need to know fo the midterm and final. PLUS he posts lecture notes which cover everything he goes over in class.
He is always available to help. Very good with e mails. and even has a cute sense of humor!

Course(s) Taken: Sociology of Emotions

TenHouten is a very interesting professor to have only because he is developing a new theory in this field of "sociology and emotions". However, his lectures are not very inspiring, and this class was not what I expected. It was mathematical and theoretical. There was nothing empirical or engaging in this class, and I thought it would talk about recent studies or the social consequences of emotions but it didn't. The class was more concerned about how emotions are formed, and the answer is a very mathematical explanation which we spend studying for a good chunk of the quarter. The professor could also be a bit tempermental--once he told two girls to leave in the middle of class because one of them was asking the other a question by whispering. I didn't think it was distracting, and it made me uncomfortable when he asked them to leave. I don't think he is a bad professor, but I don't think he was effective either. Take this class only if nothing else can be taken.. otherwise, you're better off taking another class.

I am taking sociology of time. His class is what you make of it. He does care about his students, and his lectures are good (yes, they can be slow sometimes, but in general they are interesting). He is very nice, and at times can be very funny. I think he is an awesome teacher, and is insanely knowledgeable about the subject matter. On top of that, the class is not hard by any means. I RECOMMEND.

stringent, doesn't allow subjectivity in grading. It seems he is quick to assume that students are taking advantage of him, yet he is brilliant and one on one Tenhouten can prove to be a very insightful teacher
