The BEST professor I've had at UCLA so far. With the blizzard of problem sets, review sessions, office hours, practice exams, and overall overwhelming amount of material she had for us, I was astonished she was even able to her own doctor/professor shizzle wizzle. Along with that: clear writing (sometimes I wouldn't even need my glasses to see), extra credit clicker questions, and straightforward exams (maybe a trick question here and there, but if you know your material, you're fine).

Most of the reviews here are accurate, and she is definitely a professor you should take, if given the chance.

On a side note, it's kinda too bad she's not teaching Chem 30A anymore ;___; (or so I heard) but it's likely whatever she teaches she'll pour her heart into as well.

The previous review gave the general overview of the class, so I'll just give my opinion.

Prof. Neufeldt is my favorite professor thus far. Her enthusiasm and light humor make her an avid lecturer that actually makes the topic somewhat interesting. She is also very approachable in office hours and fair when it comes to exams. The first exam is fairly easy, the second is much more difficult, and the final is in between because it's the same difficulty as the second midterm, but you get more time to think and double check your answers.
My advice would be to go to lectures for the extra credit clickers. Take good notes in lecture, then review and rewrite your notes and go to the occasional office hours. Most importantly, DO THE PROBLEM SETS, they are very similar questions to the exam.
I got an 83 on the 1st midterm, 69 on the 2nd, and almost got a perfect score on the final. I also got half the extra credit questions and I got an overall A-.

Would recommend!

I took her for Chem 30A and 30B, and she's been one of my favorite professors ever. Her lectures were always clear and she always gave out material handouts that supplemented the test. She also did really helpful review session before exams. She's also really nice to talk to!

In this class I got the worst grade I have ever received at UCLA (C+). I will say, however, that it is definitely not her fault. She is a really good professor who is clear, concise, and writes down the lectures on a chalkboard rather than uses slides. Doing this makes things go at a reasonable pace. She sends out good study materials and if you practice and go to lecture you should do well (at the very least better than I did!) The tests are challenging and long but if you did everything you should have you should be decently prepared.

I loved this class! It's mostly memorization but you also need to know how to use the different mechanisms. Neufeldt really helps you learn the material though. She's so patient and sweet during office hours too.

She is a really great professor. You'll NEVER have a moment in class where you didn't completely understand what she wrote on the board before she moves to the next topic. You'll always leave class understanding. That being said, this class is a LOT of memorization along with understanding concepts. She gives you all the problems and need to practice and do well, and its up to YOU to do them. Average first midterm was 80% second midterm average was 70%. I've done very well on both midterms because I've put in the time to do all the problems and practice, but really that's all you need to do. Do not underestimate her ability to make very challenging tests, you better know your stuff or you'll be in big trouble. Overall, incredible professor. Would recommend! Anyone who does the work and puts in time to practice can get an A in this class. Good luck!

The reason why I love Dr. Neufeldt is that her style of teaching really depends on attendance. Unlike Hardinger, you CANNOT just simply memorize the practice exams because she is relatively new to the chemistry department. In other words, NO REPEAT EXAMS. I loved her class so much and have a new love for organic chemistry because everything she says make sense! I also remember things easier when I write things down by hand. Neufeldt did a lot for our class, such as giving us a study guide before exams, generated a list of reactions for us to study, and even offered us extra credit. Although her exams are tough, she will never throw a curveball at you. Everything she tests will be found in your notes, so no need to worry about her tricking you. I did soooooo much better in chemistry 14D than chemistry 14C and I have Neufeldt to thank for that!
