The last day of this class, Rachel Fretz picks a few students and tells them to go on BruinWalk.com and submit as horrible a review as they can come up with. Rachel's favorite gets candy. I thought this was horribly cruel, so I've decided to set the record straight. Rachel Fretz is an EASY A!!!!! She's SUCH A COOL TEACHER, and she helps any student who wants to get an A. I really like her, anyone who's looking at the other reviews, it's a LIE!! she's great, and she really loves... fretz crackers? anyway yeah she's a really cool teacher and i definitely recommend her.

Rachel Fretz: paper-wasting, time-consuming, overly demanding, hypocritical, conceited, and an utter waste of a quarter at UCLA.
STAY AWAY FROM THIS WOMAN! you will REGRET taking her class more than you could ever know. She does have a tremendous talent for making a relatively easy class (English Comp 3, which fulfills the WRITING 1 requirement) nearly IMPOSSIBLE to do well in. The sheer amount of work she assigns will undoubtedly demand a majority of your time, forcing you to focus on BUSY WORK rather than other classes. The topics she obsesses over are interesting at first but GROW DULL after the first 4 articles OF HERS that DON'T SAY ANYTHING NEW. The course reader and books are EXPENSIVE and USELESS. She makes RACIST remarks from time to time and is CONDESCENDING rather than helpful. She CHANGES THE SYLLABUS AND PROMPTS to either add more work or make it due at an earlier date or make you rewrite your entire paper over the weekend and SPRINGS HOMEWORK assignment on you unexpectedly. She doesn't teach you ANYTHING about writing, only about how to please her and copy her sentences verbatim. This class has been SUCH A WASTE OF PAPER AND INK!!!! She demands MULTIPLE COPIES of each draft (oftentimes more copies than are needed so some are just THROWN AWAY) and disallows single spacing or front-to-back or using smaller text or anything. The final paper (in groups of 3-4) is MASSIVE-- including the appendices it is ROUGHLY 50 PAGES of fluff and quotes from the appendix. And i originally thought each GROUP had to turn in a copy and that upset me but EVEN WORSE, each PERSON has to turn in a copy of the 50 page monster, plus REPRINT the other papers we've written and get it BOUND so she can keep it and NOT RECYCLE. She's an AWFUL teacher too I seriously think my writing has WORSENED since taking her class. The only way to pass this class is my kissing ass and writing HER THOUGHTS RATHER THAN YOUR OWN, in her words too.The grading scale is INSANE-- One of my classmates received these comments on a paper: "Good argument. Great thesis and topic sentences. Really strong evidence. A few misplaced commas. C-"According to her, "an A is a strong argument, strong thesis and topic sentences, really eloquent writing style, completely new ideas that have never been used previously, and NO grammatical errors. a B is the same but with one grammatical error. a C is the same but with two or more grammatical errors." oh, and Rachel Fretz is certifiably INSANE!
Do yourself and PLANET EARTH a favor, and DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH RACHEL FRETZ!!! If you have ever heard any good reviews of this woman or her classes, it is merely because that person must have kissed some serious ass or really loved wasting their life.

Don't ever take a class taught by this professor, EVER! The assignments I have had in this class are the most boring, annoying, and irrelevant assignments I've ever had to do. Do yourself a favor and don't subject yourself to this experience. I won't go into detail explaining why she is so awful, just read any other review that is written here to get those details, but if I can convince one person to not take this class then it was worth taking the time to write this. STAY AWAY!!!

im sitting with my partener for her final essay, which may i add has nothing to do with english comp. we cannot fully begin to express our absolute hatred adn contempt for this slimy disgusting professor and class. it FAILS. it is all about her bragging about her GREAT accomplishments and how she speaks chokwe, french and portugese. she will remind you of this at least once every class. her essay prompts are vague and she changes them constantly. she forgets who is who, whos in what group, etc. she has an annoying high piched voice and pointy creepy teeth. she gets angry when you offer constructive criticism even after she asks for it. this has been the most traumatic experience of my entire existance. i would be happy if it werent for this class. yuck yuck yuck. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, TAKE THIS CLASS. even if it means not graduating. oh, shes also racist and unaware of it. for example, she told us that we couldnt work in a cultural group together because were both white and APPARENTLY it is impossibly to have a culture or be cultured if you are white.
anyway, just dont take the class, trust us.

If you even see this name on your class schedule. Drop that class. This lady put me through entirely too much stress throughout the ten weeks of havoc I spent with her. I also feel as though she was slightly a bit racist and often would call on me in class or offer a great amount of assistance to me because of my skin color. Also I hated when she would use me as an example. Theres 20 other students in here. I wounded up with a B- in this class and it highly upsetted me because other students who did no where near the revisions of papers and work that I did received far higher grades than me. Taking this class will be a great mistake. Find another teacher. dun dun dun or else.

This class was the bane of my existence. What everyone else has said is exactly true: she gives an unbelievable amount of work to do (although it's not particularly difficult, it's just the sheer volume of work - I don't think she realizes that we have other classes too); makes you use the equivalent of twenty trees in paper; and worst of all, makes you revise things for the sake of it, even though she doesn't read the work properly inthe first place. I also didn't agree with half the things she told us, but hey, I'm just a lowly student, whereas she is the author of Writing Ethnographic Fieldnotes (a fact she won't forget to tell you at least 100 times. It's probably going to be published in Sanskrit, don't you know). I can't tell you how much she irritated me - she doesn't believe that we students can have opinions. In fact, she just ignored me when I tried to offer suggestions in one of the stupid group conferences, which is something that most other professors encourage you to do. I quickly learned that to do well, just agree with everything she says and get on her good side. I managed this until the last week, when I eventually snapped at her after 9 weeks of doing "Yes Dr. Fretz, no Dr. Fretz, whatever you say, Dr. Fretz". I thought this would affect my grade, seeing as she is a favorites kind of professor, but I actually did really well, so it would appear not. One of her few redeeming qualities is that she is available to talk to often, but it probably goes the other way in that you'll no doubt get sick of going to her group/individual conferences outside of class time. Rant over.

Today is one of the happiest days of my life, because it was my last day of English Composition 3 with Fretz. Although I was under the impression that this class was on English Composition, I have come to the conclusion that it was actually a class studying Dante's Inferno, because after having this class I know exactly what hell is like. If you take this class, be prepared to spend around $400 on materials, including books that you will rarely use, massive amounts of ink and paper, a journal that she never looks at, and around $10 for a bound portfolio to turn in on the last day of class.
In her "conferences" Fretz will destroy your paper and tell you how to rewrite it. You will follow her instructions, and when you return the next week she will give you even more changes to make, most of which totally contradict her original comments and are closer to what you had already written.
If you are a Freshman, and are reading this review while already suffering through the course, I know how you feel, because I made the same mistake. But if you still have a chance, DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!

It is hilarious to read these other evaluations because they are all so true. Don't take her. She is nice, but disgusting. She burps all the time and talks about taking a shit. She makes you waste so much ink and paper it is a rip off.
