Laurence is hands down the best french teacher I've had at UCLA, I've taken French 3-6 here. I had her for French 6 Winter 2010. She co wrote the book so she knows exactly how to use it and you use everything in it. She is super nice so participating in class is super easy. She explains things really well. Because she's so great, going to class and doing the work is no problem. Best grade I've ever gotten in french and the most comfortable I've ever felt with the language. She really wants you to do well. I'm trying to double major in French now, she'll at least inspire you to minor if you aren't already.
Absolutely love her! She definitely knows her material (come on, she's French!) and breaks it down so it's very understandable. I enjoyed French 6 because she reviewed grammar in an easy-to-understand way, and also because she made it fun by having us watch movies and have cultural debates in class. There is homework every day, but it's typically not very long assignments and is easily doable. She's very fair and always available if you need help on anything. As long as you try and participate and make sure to turn in homework, you'll do well. Definitely recommend her for ANY French class!
Laurence is the best. She is a great professor, yet she is very humble and down to earth. She is kind and encourages her students to speak to the best of their ability. She doesn't make them feel stupid if they mess up; she is very gentle in her corrections. She grades fairly easily and gives lots of opportunities for points. This is my first quarter at UCLA and if all my teachers are as awesome as Laurence, then I know I am in for a great educational experience.
I can't say enough good things about Laurence. She is not only an effective professor, but one of the sweetest people I've met. I was having difficulty at the beginning of the class and she was very understanding and helpful and by the middle of the quarter I was doing fine. She's really funny and her accent is adorable. If you go to class almost every day (which I know is difficult since it's 4 days a week), you should do well on the exams. She's not out to trick you. She truly wants you to learn the material and do well. You should also go to class as often as possible because she takes roll and incorporates that into your overall participation grade. Speaking of that, it's important to not be shy and to participate in the class discussions as often as you can because this can help you out if you do not do too well on the exams and papers. Also, she assigns homework on most days which can get a little annoying, but I think it's a good way to get us to consistently practice our French. I strongly encourage you to attend her office hours if you are having any trouble at all because, like I said, she is extremely helpful. Laurence is a great professor and I highly recommend her for French 6.
