I first met professor Denie Higney in the le Circle Francophone (The French Club) the first quarter 2014 when I transferred in to UCLA. You get extra class credit for going and it can help although I found many of the female undergrad French students to be stuck up like ooh I speak [a little French] and people are just either intimidated to try or who knows what hey're problem is. You can't learn if you don't try and immerse yourself. Who cares if you make mistakes - that's how you learn. I regret not starting out in Fall taking French 3 or 4 but I started my French classes in Winter quarter and continued with le Circle. She is the adviser for it and always very engaged with students. She is easy going and seems patient. When I took French 4 a few quarters later she remembered me. I was actually relieved to have her teaching rather than one of the TAs [but side note, I did learn and really like Thea Cecil- Frosman who I had for French 3.] Anyway, I've taken other foreign language classes here and elsewhere and they are always everyday and intensive. All the work for the quarter was laid out on the CCLE and you just had to keep up and not fall behind (key to success!). Since she is a native French speaker it was fun to ask her what's the word for this and that and she would add little pearls of French language wisdom and talk about her children speaking French to her... Maman ....... so cute how she relayed it to us. Not annoying at all. She is funny, patient, kind, and certainly commands respect. I really like her. I remember we got into talking about the word dégoûtant - degouté (disgusting) and she would tell us about other French words not commonly known or tell us, "oh no don't use that word for that and shake her finger and make that tsk tsk sound etc. no no no.

One thing I don't really like is having to break into groups or with the person next to you to practice your French which is what you have to do here. I just want to learn from the instructor and not my fellow French students who may or may not know less than me! I get the reasoning behind it but it's not what I am used to - not my cup of tea. And the schedule! go Mon - Tues -Wed - off Thurs- go back Fri! Why not Mon thru Thurs with Friday off? And no afternoon classes - all morning until 12 ish. I never got to ask why they do that. Can't anything be easy at UCLA?

So its three or was it four papers to write with topics given . They were cool topics. A test after each chapter. The usual format dictation, an essay, a few classic poems or readings and you go over them in class, the usual memorization of verb charts, vocab, the exercises in each chapter. We did three chapters in the book, Sur le Vif and then you use the same book for French 5
Keep up (that's any class though), know your verbs and their conjugation which she is really thorough in teaching you. I thought Professor Denie-Higney made it fun. Very important to keep up with the ilrn online homework. Don't leave it to the end and try to knock it all out a day or two before it's due. That's why she gave me a B or was it a B+ either way she said it was because I didn't finish the ilrn work! boo! I wish I could have had her for all my French language classes at UCLA.

C'est ça. Je souhaite bonne chance mon camarade d'étude avec vos études françaises.

I really like Laurence as a person, but as a professor not so much. The workload is pretty intense- homework every day, three compositions, group presentation on an absolutely ridiculous novel, oral exam and a cumulative final. I did learn a lot from this class, but I have 2 major beefs with Laurence. First, she is the SLOWEST grader ever. EVER! We wouldn't get our compositions or tests back until right before our next composition or test date was. She handed back our second and third compositions at the same time- in 10th week! It's a real pain in the butt to try to keep track of your grade in the class when you don't receive any of your work back.
My second beef is that all she did was talk about France and the French culture. Granted, French culture, government, history, francophonie is in the text and Laurence did very thorough and clear lectures on those topics. However, she would just throw in a grammar lesson in the last 3 minutes of class. That was nowhere near enough time for the class to actually understand the grammar. The point of this class is to learn the French language, not write a composition on the European Union. I guess grammar bored her because all she wanted to talk about was her home country and she acted pretty superior to the class.
Overall, though, I like Laurence. I just don't like her teaching style.
