Don’t take this class with Enakoutsa. This class sucks the life out of you and it will ruin your summer. I took 32a with him and it honestly wasn’t bad outside of the confusing lectures and the amount of homework. But 32b was on another nightmarish level.. First, It’s extremely difficult to follow lectures because he mumbles and has a very thick accent, and his handwriting is awful. He also assigned so much more homework than in 32a, sometimes getting up to 50 problems a week.
We had to take the first quiz three times before he let us move on, and he made every student do the retakes. He even tried scheduling one of the retakes for a Saturday, but thankfully he moved it to be after class, only after receiving tons of requests to reschedule.
The final was also impossibly hard - 2 hours was definitely not enough and I was rushed the entire time. I probably would have needed at least 3 hours to feel comfortable, I don’t know a single person who actually completed the final. He also made a mistake on one of the questions which led to an impossible integral and there was no way to solve it. The exam was a genuine nightmare to take, although grading did seem very lenient.
Enakoutsa also constantly accused the class of cheating on quizzes/exams and he spent so much time arguing with students on his methods and policies. It’s also incredibly frustrating trying to communicate with him. He either never answers questions or argues with the student - he never provides any straightforward answers. He also writes his own reviews to boost his ratings so don’t trust every review you see.
This is a toned down version of my original draft, since eventually things turned out okay personally. I know Koffi reads these reviews, and do feel slightly bad for all the hate mail he received (he did attempt to teach and spent time including office hours on weekends).
DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS if you value your time, GPA, education, or mental health. Honestly not sure what’s left. Koffi assigned a ridiculous amount of homework every week with the justification it’s a summer course. I was accused of cheating 5 times, twice personally and thrice along with the class. We were forced to retake Quiz 1 thrice due to his own errors. He also absurdly changed expectations about attendance when his feelings were hurt because no one enjoys deciphering hieroglyphics with mumbling in the background.
Unlike previous quarters, the final brutal (even ignoring the unsolvable problem). But somehow Koffi finished the entire test in 30 min (clearly missed at least one question he wrote himself). Ultimately, 60% of the test was graded for completion, which is clearly unfair for those who didn’t write gibberish.
Everything was either a personal attack on Koffi or an academic integrity violation. He would constantly argue with students on email or Campuswire instead of addressing very reasonable issues. I’m legitimately traumatized by this class and seriously questioning enrolling in UCLA classes next summer. It used to be tolerable due to the exams, but now nothing redeemable remains.
This class is ridiculous. Not only his teaching style is bad, simply going over his lecture notes on his iPad and intolerable thick accent, the exams are not fair at all. Moreover, he blames the students for the disorganization of the course. Throughout the entire time, his way of addressing those logistics issue is basically just arguing with students. Quiz rescheduled three times and canceled a quiz. Told us to stick with the syllabus when we addressed our concerns of grading but simultaneously telling us he will no longer drop the homework with the lowest grade......Mistake on the final was also addressed not to the students' favor. Overall, he's bad at teaching and punishes students for his own mistakes.
Genuinely the worst professor in all of America. I wouldn't recommend this class to the founder of multivariate calculus. Here is a list of everything he does/did wrong:
1. Falls behind on schedule for lectures and makes you watch lectures on holidays to catch up.
2. Made us take the first quiz 3 times because he couldn't format a simple gradescope quiz correctly and blamed us
3. Made a severe typo on the final test which disrupted the test taking process for everyone and did not sufficiently account for this
4. Criticizes students for asking questions on Campuswire and threatens us not to leave bad reviews of his teaching philosophy
5. Assigned homework right before the final that we had only learned a day before and therefore have to do homework after we take the final.
Not only these, but he is the worst teacher ever. He doesn't speak good English at all and his writing is just jarring scribbles. He also assigns obscene amounts of homework, where it would be 10+ hours a week just trying to complete regular assignments. Not only this, but I am very convinced that he is the one disliking these reviews and the one who left the only positive review, because the writing is insanely similar.
He rescheduled 1 quiz for 3 times and even tried to make us do it over the weekend; cancelled 1 quiz because he messed up his teaching schedule; said he would drop 2 lowest HW in syllabus but just announced he would not do so by the end of the quarter; he made a mistake in the question of the final exam and caused most ppl wasted 30 mins for nothing and did not take any action after the exam regarding this issue.
Let alone the crazy amount of homework (more than 10 hours per week) and random changes to attedence requirements. He refused to admit that things were so unorganized in his class and exerted a lot of pressure on us students.
He is the worst of worst, avoid him at all costs. The other good comments are all his OWN SPAM.
To the trash who called Prof. Kofi a Trash Professor: you are the trash that should not be brought on this earth. I feel sorry for your mother...
That been said, Kofi is incredibly smart professor. Challenges you to think critically about every aspect of the topic he is teaching. Very thoughtful and considerate as well. Multivariable calculcus has been one of my favorite courses, and I suspect Professor Kofi will be one of the most influential professors I have as a student.
Trash professor, I would say... First, I could not literally understand what he was saying in the lecture nor know what he was writing on notes. With extremely unclear teaching, he left tons of assignments, roughly 20-30 problems a week--those were time-consuming. I did not learn anything from him but how to stand with a terrible accent and handwriting. The only positive side is he holds review sessions before each test. You are guaranteed a decent test score if you are mighty enough to understand what he is talking about and writing.
The biggest knock on Enakoutsa is that he assigns WAY too much homework. The HW assignments every week would range anywhere from 10-20 pages for me on GoodNotes for me and it would take hours upon hours to complete. While it did force me to learn the content, it was just too much. That being said HW was the best way for me to learn. His lectures were difficult to watch since he has this calligraphy handwriting that's hard to read and his accent is hard to understand also. Given lectures were on Zoom, he also scrolled through his notes way too fast (I would always have to go back to the recording so I could copy down the notes). The reason why I'd still recommend Enakoutsa over other professors is that his tests are super easy. They're super similar to homework (sometimes even the same but with different numbers), or he takes problems that he goes over in his review sessions (on the final he went over at least two questions verbatim in his review session). All in all, average professor, easy tests, and would take again.
TL,DR: Difficult lecture delivery, lengthy assignments (graded on completion though), bust easy/straightforward tests. Would recommend!!! :) He's very nice
Three things.
𝗢𝗻𝗲: Enakoutsa had written out his notes for the entire course already on his iPad in thick, calligraphy-brush marks, and his lectures simply comprised of him commentating on his drawings and calculations while circling things with the laser pointer. It was very difficult to follow and keep up with the pace since everything was already written out. His thick French accent can also be hard to understand sometimes. Most of our lectures were on Zoom, and he streams them on YouTube too so you can pause when needed.
𝗧𝘄𝗼: His homework assignments 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙡𝙤𝙣𝙜. They often include the last few questions of the chapter, which are the hardest to do. However, homework is pretty much graded based on completion so as long as you show some work or attempt at all the problems, you should be fine. Also FYI: discussion worksheets do not need to be completed 100%. He only wants you to submit the work you can do in 1 discussion time frame.
𝗧𝗵𝗿𝗲𝗲: His tests are wonderful. Very straightforward, clear, and simple. He tells you what questions to expect, and as long as you attend his review sessions and understand the general idea then you will be fine (One of the questions on the final was from his final review session!). No trick questions; ~4 questions per test. Definitely recommend this professor if you want easy tests.
Overall, I had a good experience with Koffi primarily because of the easiness of the tests. Despite the difficult lecture method and lengthy assignments, the tests made it worth. Koffi is also very kind and is always willing to help, often hosting additional office hours before exams. Definitely recommend!
So, I swear Koffi is very nice and is a good professor that knows his material. However, I cannot for the life of me understand his accent + handwriting. He comes from France, which I assume is where he got his distinct style but I have not successfully acclimated to it. It doesn't help that his audio is slightly muffled and the video quality is sub-optimal. It has become not possible for me to watch the lectures in person without getting behind on my note writing but a plus is that as well as being streamed on zoom, it is live-streamed on youtube at the same time so I can watch along and pause whenever. I find myself behind on watching lectures as there is an additional 4th lecture on Tuesdays that are pre-recorded. He is very lenient with late homework submissions and very understanding if you need help though. I advise taking him in person and working with him to ensure you have the best chance in his class because I feel like chalk is his medium and he is a great teacher otherwise.
