This class is mostly dependent on your TA, but the workload is light and lectures are fun. Exams are fair, just be sure to study for them.

My TA was Mme. Darriet and I just want to talk about how great she is. I loved French class. She was funny and so helpful and approachable. She was also very understanding and graded us pretty leniently. The workload for this class is pretty much tbh but it’s not that hard to stay on top of. The Mindtap activities, in particular, were very engaging and interesting to do.

The French 3 classes are all taught by TAs and are overseen by Dr. Jansma. I had Rebecca Glasberg as my TA, and she was great. She was super clear, very understanding, and I would recommend anyone to take this course with Rebecca.
In terms of the actual content of the course, there were 3 midterms, 3 short (~1 page) essays (1 written in class, 2 written at home), and short, daily homework assignments. The essay was composed of two parts - oral and written.
The midterms were definitely doable if you put in the effort to study a bit beforehand. They are not tricky, so if you know the material, you will do well. I did find 3 midterms to be a bit much, but I'm told that they are considering bringing it down to 2 midterms in the future quarters.
Homework is super easy and is done online each night. It shouldn't take more than 15-20 minutes to do the daily assignments.
The oral final exam was a 5 minute conversation with a partner & reading a small passage to test for pronunciation. Definitely not anything to stress over.
I felt that the final was more difficult than the midterms had been, but it wasn't terrible, either. There was a 20-25 sentence essay portion, and I felt the topics given were difficult to write about.
You do have to attend each lecture in order to get full credit for participation, but you can miss a few and make it up with extra credit opportunities, if necessary. This class is also taught entirely in French, with very few things explained in English, so be prepared for that.
Overall, this class is a pretty easy class, especially if you have previous French experience. I came into this class with 4 years of high school French and found it to be fairly easy. On the other hand, if you think you'll struggle, this would be the perfect class to take pass/no pass.

The class was relatively easy and I found it very enjoyable. I was surprised by how much I learned!

Selling newest edition of Motifs for $100, slightly used but still in good condition
The book is the same for French 1-3 and price is negotiable.

I didn't have Professor Jansma, but I just wanted to talk about the TA's I had for French 1 through 3.
I loved every single one of them!
Samuel Yniesta: He is French and definitely a great teacher. He was really easy to talk to! He graded pretty easily and fairly.
Hannah Vaughn: I think she was the head of the TA's at the time, and she was amazing. Her class was one of my favorites. I'm usually really shy with speaking in class, but she was anything but intimidating. She was always helpful and never made you feel bad about making a mistake. She was incredibly sweet and highly recommend her as a TA.
Catherine Mullen: She goes by Katie, and she was absolutely amazing. I was really intimidated by her at first, but throughout the course of the class, she was so easy going. She never put anyone on the spot. She kept order in the classroom but still created a fun environment to learn it. She also baked for us several times and acted like a friend. It was really a pleasure to get to know her. I was gone for a week and she took the time to sit with me and catch me up on everything I had missed. The day of the final, she had office hours for a few hours despite having her own work to do/being tired, and answered every question we had. She was the first TA I went to office hours for, and it gave me the courage to go to other classes' office hours as well.

I didn't have Prof. Jansma, but I've met her and she conveys a great enthusiasm for French language and culture. That said, I had a TA for French 3, and he was absolutely great. He's one of those people you'll probably want to keep in touch with. My other friends in other sections of French 3 loved their TAs, too, so I think it's a safe bet to say you'll end up with a great teacher.

French was by far my favorite course of the qtr, if that says anything. Take it if you can!
