I enjoyed Professor Newton's class though definitely not an easy A. You have to understand what is ethical and not get your opinion mixed up in your answers on exams. I would take another class with him to learn more, he is very kind.

Professor gives no slides to his lectures, he speaks fast but also mumbles so it's impossible to listen to anything what he's saying. His exams are online, which breaks the whole point of not being able to cheat and plagiarizing. Again, it is extremely difficult to know what he's talking about from the way he talks. We have no sense of progress in his class because he does not give us practice questions or homework... People probably like him because he gives free As but it's not as easy as it seems. If you're reading this, take my advice and DON'T take his class.

The worst class I have ever taken. His lectures are in mumbles. Talks too much about Trump. Exam questions are unclear. Avoid.

TAKE THIS CLASS!!! I LOVED professor newton and learned so so much. His lectures are not recorded, and he does not use slides, so make sure you take good notes. The readings were interesting and he is able to provide insight into real life applications, as he worked at the LA Times. He cares a lot about his students and provides help whenever possible. I really recommend!!

Take this class! Don't listen to the other reviews, this class is an easy A as long as you have notes from the lecture. I know it's hard to pay attention because he doesn't use slides, but it's worth it to get a good grade on the exams. Both the final and midterm are online and open note, so no lock down browser. Everything you need for the exam is straight from your notes/lecture, so as long as you have notes (yours or someone else's) you should get an A on the exams. I got a 98 on the midterm and an A+ in the class. It is super easy and pretty interesting information also the only downside is it gets hard to pay attention since he doesn't use slides.

I really liked this class. As someone who has no prior experience in journalism, I wasn't sure what I signed up for. But this class was super informative and fascinating! We went over lots of ethical dilemmas in different fields and on how to approach them as a true journalist. The professor is VERY down to earth, cool guy, VERY kind and appreciative, experienced in his field (loved hearing his personal stories from when he was working in LA Times). I sat in the second row and had no problem hearing him whatsoever, but he's the only professor that didn't use a mic in his lectures (compared to other professors I've taken this quarter).
The exams were a bit hard for me because it can be hard to give a super clear answer on the topic of ethical issues. There's lots of gray area in the content of the course, anything is rarely black and white, which can make it harder to convey your thoughts in a limited amount of time during the exam. Both exams are online btw.

Highly recommend and I think anyone who's thinking of working in a field related to journalism or media MUST take this class! :)

I really enjoyed this class! The Professor was incredibly knowledgeable, well-spoken, and interesting. Even though I had to take it at 9:30AM, I actually looked forward to this class. The readings are manageable. You are graded on the midterm and final, which was a little stressful due to time constraints - online long answer questions. But, he was a very reasonable grader. Participation is encouraged, but Prof Newton isn't really strict about it. One of my favorite classes I've taken at UCLA by far. Selling the course book at 50% discount! - Contact me at **********
