Quarter: Fall 2018
Grade: A
Dec. 22, 2018

Dr. Casey really is a godsend. If you have the opportunity to take Chem 14CL with her, do not pass it up! She is so sweet, approachable, friendly, caring, and intelligent. Her office hours are truly helpful, and she'll often go over answers to the pre-lab questions and give very specific help with your post-labs. Make sure to go to her office hours before CPR assignments also, otherwise you will likely lose points. I really appreciate that unlike some other professors, she's really not trying to trick you. Casey will answer questions directly and straightforwardly, while obviously still trying to maintain the integrity of the assignment. Her exams are fair, but really make sure to focus on conceptual content. As in, truly focus on the material presented on the slides, ask questions about things you may be unclear about in office hours, and recognize that the problem sets are math-heavy but her exams truly are concept-heavy.

I had a lot of anxiety during the midterm and I completely misinterpreted multiple questions, which made the difference between me getting a ~90% and actually getting a 64%. It was an absolute nightmare, given that I felt like I genuinely knew the material. It was especially traumatizing considering that I'm used to getting 90s in chem. But, don't be deterred because in our class the midterm literally only counted for 9% of the grade.

What helped me was definitely that Casey was extraordinarily encouraging. I developed a rapport with her during 14BL when I was generally having a harder time (outside academics), and she literally told me to just set up an appointment with her whenever I wanted to speak to her. After that, she would ALWAYS greet me by name whenever she would see me, and that was so, so sweet.

This quarter when I let her know that, as a student with disabilities, who also has phone anxiety, that I was super uncomfortable with making phone calls to ask questions during exams... she really went out of her way to try to support me. We discussed it, and she tried to really emphasize that she wanted me to feel comfortable, so she actually stopped by personally in my separate testing location to help answer questions.

Casey really, really, really cares about her students. And she's a truly engaging lecturer also. With her support, and also recognizing that she HEAVILY emphasizes concepts, I was able to get an 87% on the final and ultimately about 93-94% in the class for a solid A.

Professor Casey is one of the best professors I've had at UCLA. I took her for 14BL the quarter before, and that definitely helped with my understanding of 14CL since the class format is almost exactly the same. It might be overwhelming for people who have never had her before.

Casey's CCLE page is super organized, which makes it easy to find due dates and assignments. (She also includes check boxes for you to check and know what assignments you've finished which is so cute.) Her lectures are engaging (but not mandatory) and her office hours are very helpful. I highly recommend going to these even if you've never attended office hours in your life. She's super sweet and approachable! Her midterm isn't too difficult (there's only one) but the final is definitely harder. But if you study the material (ESPECIALLY LEARNING OBJECTIVES), keep up with pre/post labs and their deadlines, and put in the work, you should do fine!

Also, TAs really matter in 14BL/CL since you spend most of your time with them. If you know a TA will be good, make sure you get them (even if it's an 8AM lab). HIGHLY RECOMMEND Jay McDaniel, best TA I've ever had.

Dr Casey is a fantastic lecturer and awesome professor. She genuinely cares for her students and offers a solid amount of extra credit.

You have 2 labs a week so theres a lot of busy work. Her exams are fair and not super hard but not easy either. Her study guides are way harder than the actual exams too so dont worry if you struggle on them!

Do the problem sets, do the study guides, go to office hours (both for Casey and TA), and do the extra credit and you will be fine. Highly recommend office hours just so you get as many points as you can for extra credits and labs.

Professor Casey is an amazing lecturer in that she teaches you the concepts very well. However, her exams are very conceptual. The good thing is the majority of the class points come from lab, which is just a ton of busy work. If you need all the newest (fall 2018) A graded labs, text me @ **********. I will sell them for 5 dollars.

Casey is bae. I had her for Chem 14BL too, and she's such a kind, respectful, funny, and caring PERSON. Even though I was learning from her as a teacher, she doesn't let her position affect how she treats others, and that is the main reason why I think she's one of the best professors at UCLA. Not to mention that she knows her stuff WELL. Literally, for every one of my questions, she gave a concise, clear answer that made sense! It wasn't even like I had to really think about it afterwards to try to decipher what she says. She's a blessing. She's great. This is my last chem lab class, and honestly I'm so grateful to have taken it with her. For people who truly take classes to learn and not care about the grade, you will enjoy this class. I literally felt like I wasn't even being graded; I was just having fun learning and engaging with the lecture material and labs, and my grade reflected that.
