This class is very interesting if you are either pre-law or want to pursue something in business. I am a third year econ major with the intention to go into financial consulting. I definitely recommend this class to anyone who wants to know the small details about contracts, securing transactions, and the ins and outs of business entities. The lectures are interesting-- I never missed one class. Group assignments are straight forward and pretty easy. The exams were very tricky for me, however. Take her if you need an interesting class for upper div units. grade: B-

The first day of class had me hooked...but every day after that I dreaded going to class. Her true colors come out later. She likes to pick on people and "joke" around, except for the fact that her jokes aren't funny and she's actually rather mean.

Here's a few words to describe her: sexist (favors women), narcissistic (likes to ramble on about herself), and disorganized. Her lectures mainly consist of answering nuance question after nuance question. By the end of it you know pretty much a ton of garbage.

Exams are crap. The multiple choice consists of the majority of the grade. Even though they take half as long to complete. The midterm was 80 points (i think 60 points MC and 20 free response). So if you answer one MC wrong thats like blowing an entire essay question. FURREAL? Yea furreal. BS. Same thing with the final except MC is now worth 120 points out of 180, maybe even more. (side note: book=$100+ dollars=waste of money)

I mean if you're really interested in the subject and enjoy 40+ year old, unorganized, sexist professors who are into themselves, then by all means go for it.

Oh...and congrats to those couple of students who finished their tests first. We're all proud of you! You guys are fantastic....

Yea so what I'm a hater.

The class was very interesting. Prof. Guerin was a very good teacher. She always made the class entertaining and explained the difficult concepts very well.
The Group projects were also pretty helpful and rather straightforward. On the other hands, the Mid Term and Final were mainly multiple choice questions which were pretty hard from time to time. The essay questions were rather short, straightforward and generous.
All in all, you must attend class and pay attention. (This is not too hard since Prof. Guerin is very good and makes you want to go) Reading the book will help as well.
Grade received: A-

Guerin is a nice teacher. Intimidating, but nice. Actually very intimidating. There's just something about her that makes you scared of her class, perhaps its all the reviews about how hard the class is. Everyone is absolutely correct - this class is awesome and interesting and she does make the class very interesting, but at the same time it is so frustrating that you can study so much yet still be unsure when you take the exams.

I agree with a previous review that states it is very odd that she assigns us group problems based on reading she has not yet discussed in class. Granted it forces you to actually read ahead so you end up knowing in advance some of the topics she will lecture about, but at the same time it is a bit unfair to be graded on work that she has not yet even covered in class. Some of the group questions can be tricky, but definitely understand them and try to write down the answers when she goes over it in class.

Why? Because they reappear on the final. Best way to study for the final is to concentrate on Contracts and Secured Transactions - she loves to test those two topics mainly because there are so many nuances, variables, and factors. Definitely also study the questions in the course reader that she writes, along with the extra questions on the group problems. I looked them over and realized at least 6 of them appeared on the final in some variation. Go to office hours and go over those problems with her as she doesnt go over all of the problems in class. That is one thing I really regret not doing - going in advance to office hours every week to make sure I had the answers to those questions. A couple midterm questions also popped up again on the final, so stay around after you finish the midterm because she goes over the midterm.

Overall, I just finished the final and I think I'll be lucky to get a B. The class is hard, be forewarned. But otherwise, Guerin is a good professor that teaches an interesting subject that is practical for anyone. Too bad the class is so hard.

Guerin does an excellent job teaching this very interesting course. The real life case examples she incorporates into lecture solidify her students' understanding of the material and her interactive approach (using a seating chart and calling on students by name) makes for an engaging class.

The professor has a feisty attitude that I found refreshing and entertaining. She was definitely not boring and kept you on your toes. I expected to get an A in the class as I got near perfect scores on all the group assignments but the final really through me off...all those questions about secured transactions...ugh. I ended up getting a B+. The final was a bit tricky and you really have to know your stuff inside and out. Don't slack off in this class and do the readings. Be in class for the examples that she gives because some of them end up on the exams. Exquisite dresser may I add although that really has no relevance.

I liked Professor Guerin. I thought her lectures were interesting and her stories about real life situations added to the class. At the time I felt that they were somewhat unorganized (like some of the other kids who commented), but when I reviewed them before the exams I realized that they did actually follow a logical order. I did not think that the exams were that tricky. As long as you go over the practice problems she gives you in lecture you will be totally fine.

The one thing I did not like about the class was the way the homework assignments were structured. You have to answer the homework questions before she goes over the material in class. The book makes some of the concepts very complicated (which seem so simple after she covers them). Plus you have to work as a group, and so inevitably you can be stuck with people who don't read or do their share. But even though my group did not do the greatest on the homeworks I still did well in the class because of the way the tests are weighted.

Professor Guerin's lectures were a bit scattered and disorganized, and failed to cover a lot of concepts that were in the book. However, she seems really nice and is chock-full of interesting stories and experiences that relate to what she's trying to teach. My advice: stick to what's in the textbook, and read over and over again the case studies that are given in the text, and do the problems!! If you're a visual learner and you don't like disorganized lectures with random figures and occasional concepts, then try another professor. If you're an audio learner, great.

Next, her exams. When I took the midterm, I thought I did fine. When I got the midterm grade, I nearly fainted from the shame of doing so horribly. I had no idea what trickery she had up her sleeve. However, I learned from my mistake and studied like I had never studied before for the final, went over my answers twice, looked in between the words and lines for extra tricks, and I must have done a beautiful job because thank heavens, I ended up with a B (I was expecting much lower). And it was all because I memorized the concepts and cases in that 20-lb textbook, and did every single problem at the end of the chapters.

This is my first quarter at UCLA and this is the hardest one that I am taking. If you are a new transfer student, I won't advise you to take her class as there are lots of readings assigned!
The cases are very hard, midterm is tricky, but the final is all right. To do the cases, you have to read 5 chapters in advance and you probably won't remember what you have read as the reading materials are too much! Overall, I get an A- and I was really surprised as I was expecting a B.
I guess the curving really helps a lot. Other than tha, the teacher is very funny and interesting.
