Quarter: Fall 2019
Grade: A+

Both the textbook and workbook are quite necessary for this course but are reasonably priced so shouldn't be a problem. If you show up to all classes and discussions you barely need to study aside from maybe 20 minutes of quizlets beforehand for the daily quizzes in lectures which is probably the hardest part of the course. Course is incredibly accessible to everyone and is super fun so would recommend even if not super into Korean pop-culture (am not Korean nor was too invested in Korean pop-culture.)

Again, highly recommend taking this class as well as this instructor! This quarter was definitely a bit harder and the first midterm was actually quite challenging because of all the new grammar rules introduced but afterward it wasn't bad at all. The quiz format changes about 2/3 into the quarter where you have to now place the vocab words into context which honestly made it easier because you don't have to completely memorize all the words if you guess from context. Pay attention to the things she says to memorize during the lectures as they'll usually come up as extra credit opportunities during quizzes.

Quizlet and come to class and you'll be good!

Finished the series! Was amazing and wouldn't take this class with anyone else. She taught incredibly well online and the TAs were all also super amazing.

Im 선생님 is incredibly sweet and willing to advance her students' understanding of the Korean language and culture!
Usually, she plays K-pop songs before class and asks the class for recommendations (it's a great way to explore new artists ^^), but sometimes we just jump straight into lecture.
Every lecture, she talks in English probably 97% and Korean 3%; it might be a little confusing the first few classes but the more vocabulary/grammatical sentence structures you learn, the easier it becomes to understand what it is she is saying, and I think that's why she does it. You might feel a little frustrated at first but you'll soon find yourself answering her questions in Korean instead of English.
The class itself is very easy; there are vocabulary tests almost every class starting the second week of school but if you practice reading and writing the vocabulary lists in the textbook, you'll pass them with full points.
In discussion, you turn in workbook homework assignments, and this is also where you have your two oral projects. The first oral project is a self introduction and Im 선생님 and her TAs upload the format of the script so it's easy to just fill in the blanks with your information.
The final oral project/exam is a dub of a show; you work with one or two students and the three of you create a Korean script to a video, dub it with your voice, and then you watch it the last week of class.
There are two lecture exams and one final (comprehensive) but study guides are provided and the actual test format is uploaded by Im 선생님 so just study, study, study!! ^^

I took this course completely online with Professor Im. The lectures are twice a week and they're pretty long. It can be hard to stay focused sometimes. However, she encourages us to participate and turn on our cameras. Please do so she doesn't feel lonely :< !! There are weekly vocab quizzes done in section. This was a sort of stressful part of the class for me personally near the end of the quarter when I had to study for other midterms along with memorize the 20-30 words. Other than that, the tests and homework assignments (based on completion) were fairly easy. We also have a couple of extra credit opportunities. There is a group project where you record a 2-3 minute video in Korean. This part was also a bit stressful especially coordinating with other members entirely online. I would recommend not procrastinating on this. Other than that, I highly recommend this class. You learn A LOT in a single quarter, and it's refreshing from core classes. The TAs are also really nice.
