I took Kurz (pronounced KURTZ) summer '04 along with another class. I dreaded the class before but absolutely enjoyed his class. I looked forward to coming into lecture and for once feel truly interested in what he had to say. It did help that he refrained from droning on and on about the same material. His lectures are very, very well prepared so that you learn a lot but you don't feel overwhelmed by the material. He is concise and precise about the material. Kurz is very approachable before/after class. I would definitely recommend Kurz to anyone and everyone. Pretty easy on the grading too.

I highly recommend taking Professor Kurz's class if you don't like just sitting through boring lectures constantly. He doesn't just rattle off historical facts and dates. His lectures actually stimulate your mind and he challenges you think and come up with your own ideas. For history majors like myself that's what history writing is all about. For those who aren't you can benefit from what he has to say also. He may come off as a litte harsh at first but that's just to weed out the slackers. If you're a serious student he will know it and will help guide you through the academic process. UCLA should have more professors that actually care about showing students how to succeed and love what they teach like Professor Kurz.

Professor Kurz, as so many of his students have said so far, is extraordinary. Rest assured that there is absolutely noone like him in the history departnment. He is reasonable in regards to student performance and goes out of his way to help those who really want to learn. You won't appreciate history until you take a class by Professor Kurz, as he will shape your understanding of and apppreciation for major historical events in a way that no other professor can and ever will--I can promise you that. Aside from that, Professor Kurz is simply a remarkable person to know. He will amaze you with his vitality of mind, strength of character, and incredible sense of humor.

Kurz is amazing. Definitely the best professor I've encountered at UCLA. He cares passionately about student learning and goes out of his way to make himself available. If you take him for a seminar, don't let the easy rating fool you. He expects a lot out of his students, but he has no problem helping you go the extra mile. He's incredibly interesting and even more approachable. You MUST take a class with him before you graduate.

I can write endlessly about what an outstanding instructor professor Kurz is. He is without question the best professor I have had in UCLA. Professor Kurz genuinely cares about his students and generously devotes his time before and after class. He is kind, humble, and friendly despite his vast intellectual achievements and is beyond words an incredible person with profound viewpoints and a striking sense of humor. The ratings on professor Kurz deserve higher than a 10. UCLA is lucky to have him, and a student who takes his class is fortunate to have encountered such an amazing personality.

I took Prof. Kurz during Summer Session C. He IS the best professor. He will make anyone love history. He's such a funny guy...He's a F***in saint! Real nice guy who truly cares about his students. Take him if you can. By the way, if you're from New Jersey...you'll like this guy...always mentions New Jersey.

Professor Kurz wins the greatest teacher ever award. Ask and he will tell you about how I ended up getting a P/NP grade when I actually earned an A+, and i suck at history! He makes his lectures fun and really interesting. He doesnt simply regurgitate information, but he turns them into stories with voices and everything. It doesnt feel like you are in class. Best class offered and taught by the BEST teacher in this school. Take this class for elective credits if needed, its definitely worth it!!!

Professor Kurz is an incredible teacher. I have never had so much fun in a history class, and I HATE history...probably one of my worst subjects. I took him over the summer, which some would think would be difficult considering its a compressed course, but I loved it. I had it three days a week, and I would look forward to each class session. He actually cares about his students and that they learn. He is absolutely hysterical and I would recommend his class to ANYONE!!! Even if he teahces a class that has nothing to do with your major...take him anyway, its worth it!
