People always say that Math 131A is the hardest undergraduate math class, but Professor Eskin made the content much easier. He taught from the memory and made almost no mistakes. For all the convoluted theorems, he was able to point out all the hard points in the derivation and repeat until everyone understood. He was also helpful in his office hours to explain the HW problems and repeat the proofs as many times as you want.

His exams were not difficult. More than half of the problems were exact proofs from the lectures (thought there were about 20 proofs for the midterm and more than 40 for the final). The rest were some kind of modifications. However, I barely gained partial credits. I did the first part of a proof correctly and the second part incorrectly and only got 10/25 for that problem.

In the end, it doesn’t seem like he give a generous curve, at lease for the quarter I had. From the distribution given by my TA, 1 student got more than 90%, 2 more than 80%, and 3 more than 70%. All these people got A, and the others received B or less, no A- or B+ given.

This prof is definitely one of the best at UCLA. He makes analysis manageable for the students. It is pretty important to go to lecture because it gives you all the information that you need for the test and also sometimes hints on midterm or final questions. In addition, his review sessions before each exam are very helpful.

Really great lecturer, if you sit in the front two rows... to be able to hear him clearly. Everything on the exams was covered in lecture, no trick questions whatsoever. Everybody I know including myself received an A in his course. His office hours are great if you're struggling with any homework problem or concepts. In short, this man is a genius!

A few things, the book assigned for this class (small and red, ten bucks at ucla store) was terrible and I stopped reading after the first section. I recommend getting another textbook, I used Saff's to learn the material.. even online slides for intro to complex analysis would be more useful. Still need the book for the hw, though.

He usually assigned a lot of hw questions, I'm talking 15-30. This hw took me foreveeeer to complete... but in the long run helped solidify my knowledge b/c the key to learning this material is doing a ton of problems.

Grade was hw, one midterm, and final. Two grading schemes, one with and one without the midterm.

Overall, this guy is old school, hand written exams, nothing on the course website except hw problems, and he lectures without notes!

I just thought he was a GREAT professor. I recommend!
