You will not succeed in this class unless you record the lectures. There’s a midterm and final exam, both of which are entirely written aka no multiple choice. You could probably get away with not reading the articles but you definitely need to know what he covers in lecture in order to do well. I don’t think I would have done nearly as well if I wasn’t able to re-listen to lectures because he talks pretty quickly and it’s easy to miss things unless you ask him outright. However he does hint at concepts you should know but he doesn’t provide any sort of study guide. There’s also an 8 page final paper worth a good chunk of your grade.
I think the midterm was graded pretty harshly (I got points off for not having enough explanation or having the right general answer but didn't mention the correct term). The professor was pretty good at lecturing but I do think the lecture slides and lecture weren't great at mentioning when things were specific terms that we had to memorize or just descriptors to a concept. Also, the professor got off track a lot and it got confusing to keep track of what was happening. The lack of recording made review difficult because the professor also talked quickly enough that I couldn't write everything down always.
Class is broken into 50% midterm, 50% final. There are 2 reading responses (that you'll need the course reader for) that are graded credit/no credit. You don't receive a grade for them, but if you fail to complete them, your grade gets docked 20%.
Readings are so important!! It's so hard to bullshit the papers if you haven't read. He references a lot of the readings during lecture and it gets kind of confusing if you haven't at least skimmed his passages.
Midterm and final is decent, as long as you've read and gone to section you'll do fine. You discuss a ton of readings in section. He gives out 'hints' of what will be on the midterm/final during section as well! They're almost verbatim from the questions he gives out.
Material is not hard, mostly a memorization based class.
Selling my Course Reader + midterm/final notes and study guides + completed and graded papers for $35 OBO!! Almost perfect condition for physical books. Text me **********
Bryant is a chill professor. His class was a tougher communications class but definitely very doable. Readings are very scientific but I only skimmed them. I got a 90 on the midterm, don't know what I got on the final exam or final paper but it had to have been As since I got an A in the course so it wasn't too difficult.
I AM SELLING THE COURSE READER. CHEAP price. text me for details **********
I took this class Fall 2013. The class was very interesting even though I fell asleep most of the time, maybe because it was after lunch. If you like learning about language and music and how they relate this is the class for you. You do have to study though, I studied the day before the test for both the midterm and final and ended up with an A- in the class.
I am selling the course reader for $40 if anyone is interested. My course reader is in almost new condition with my highlighted notes in it. Email me if you are interested, *************
