Do not be fooled by the reviews that say this class is easy. Poli Sci 20 may be easy for poli sci majors, but as a stem major taking this course as an GE, it was not that easy. I never read the textbook but made sure to attend every lecture (or watch the recordings) and attended every section. I never had homework for this course but I definitely studied a lot for the midterm and final. The analysis paper which is worth 25% of your grade is solely based on your TA's grading so make sure to attend office hours and discuss your outline. Participation also depends on your TA; mine was pretty strict so I did not get 100% for that even though I participated at least one time every class. All in all, this GE is very light, just make sure to put in the effort.
Eric Min was a great professor; he was funny and very clear about what would be on the final by bolding key words in his lecture slides. The class is split up by a Policy paper, a final, a midterm, and discussion participation. The TAs had rules such as "Aren't allowed to read Policy Paper," which really undermined the grades earned, since it was the first time writing a Policy Paper, so that we couldn't get any help. For the midterm, please study at least 5 days beforehand. This is not an Easy A GE, but it is definitely very passable.
Professor Min is one of the best professors I have ever had. He makes the concepts very clear and easy to understand. The paper was a bit hard, but talking to the TA of him helped out a lot.
I loved Eric so much omg. He was super engaging and I kind of regret not showing up to class more often... He did post all the recorded lectures on BruinLearn, which I always love :)
The workload was fairly light. It was mostly readings, but they weren't required. We also had a quarter-long project in the form of a paper. I was somewhat worried about this but the TAs definitely guide you through the process and it's honestly fairly easy as long as you do the research and understand basic class concepts.
The midterm and the final were fairly challenging, so def study for those! There is no study guide provided, but past students did post their quizlets online. Aside from those, I mostly used the slides and recordings, as well as the textbook! I def recommend getting the book, especially if you aren't planning on attending all the lectures lol.
I RECOMMEND THIS CLASS SO MUCH
I loved this class with Professor Min! The class was simple and easy, with the grade consisting of attendance, an essay, a midterm exam, and a final exam. Professor Min is great at explaining and breaking down all the key focuses of the class while also making lecture really engaging with a few jokes. Professor Min also records lectures and posts the lecture slides after every class. The exams for the class are fair but definitely require studying your notes or lecture slides to ensure a great score. The exams are not curved unless stated specifically by Professor Min. Overall, I loved World Politics with Professor Min. I highly recommend it to anyone doing lower-div courses or for an interesting GE.
Professor Min is a great teacher. He is super funny and his lectures were always enjoyable to watch. My interest in the topic grew after this course, even though I am not a huge fan of poli sci content. Max was an engaging TA, but the lectures and sections often felt disconnected. Also, the whole course was aimed at writing a paper about a conflict, which taught me a lot about this specific conflict, though I think different assignments would have been more interesting to me, with maybe just a white paper being the final. It was a group project with 3 other people, which was hard to coordinate, and the length of the paper with not many clear guidelines was difficult. Overall, though, I enjoyed the lectures, and professor min is great!!
Let me start by saying this class is not like an easy easy GE, but I think the information you get out of this class is top tier. In a really changing world what you get out of this class is so so important. In regards to this class it is divided by TA attendance and participation, Midterm, Paper, and final. You have to study the material and there is a lot of vocab to memorize but if you study like 5 days before you should be good. The professor is top tier and is extremely clear in the way he organizes his lectures. I highly recommend anyone take this class.
Prof. Min was one of the best professors I've had at UCLA, and he's well-knowledgeable and clearly passionate about his subject. His slides are extremely clear and well-organized, and frankly the only thing you need to study to ace his class (the class is assigned a textbook, but it really isn't necessary). He's incredibly engaging and gives a lot of examples in class, and the syllabus is well-structured.
Our only assignment other than the midterm and final was the analysis paper, which was broken into various assignments across the quarter. The topic is easily researchable, and the TAs are helpful when giving feedback.
The midterm and final were both extremely doable. They were a combination of short answer and multiple choice, and everything could be found on the slides. They were similar to the practice tests he provided, and he even added extra points to everyone's midterms and finals to boost the class average. Overall a very manageable and fun class, and I truly think I learned a lot.
Professor Min is a very good lecturer. You really don't need to do the textbook readings. He gives fill in the blank slides with bolded words, and those are the best study tools, as most of the content for the midterm and final comes from that. Participation matters, but they don't emphasize it, but if you participate once per section you should be okay. The midterm and final were both super fair and he curved them. Also, he will curve the class if less than 35% of people get an A- or above. He is very helpful and a great professor.
One of the best professors I've had at UCLA. Class content delivery was very clear. Professor Min also made the class very interesting and interactive. The amount of reading can get a little heavy sometimes, but are overall not too difficult. As long as you do the readings and participate, you will be fine.
