Absolutely hellish time in Milburns class. He explains things in the worst way then gets mad at you for not getting it. Absolutely unapproachable teacher, will not help you if you are struggling. He is rude, and enjoys embarrassing his students. Maybe three people keep up with him and not a single soul feels confident in the content were learning. Makes me want to drop out of music.

As someone with a background in MTAC classical piano theory, the first class in the 20 series felt a lot like half-review and half new things, especially with the focus on jazz and blues. Professor Milburn explained a lot of music theory concepts that I used to be really confused about in ways that were much more understandable. He's willing to answer as many questions as needed and him and the TAs made the classroom environment feel like a safe space to ask questions about concepts that might feel basic or elementary. That being said, it's also entirely up to you to ask questions about homework and go to office hours if you're confused---if you don't understand something one week, it can make it really difficult to understand the following week's material. There's no midterm and you'll do fine on the final if you understand the homework.

if i didn't have the TA I probably would have failed,Milburn answers most questions with impatience...not understanding with students' misunderstanding.....acts like we are composers with doctorates and years of experience like him......I'm lucky I love theory
He is a nice guy though in a way.
