I took Physics 5B with Professor Niemann. Professor Niemann is a great professor who is direct in what he expects. His grading scheme is very generous in that you can drop a midterm of half a final. He doesn't look like it, but he is very understanding when it comes to grades and the concerns of students. His tests although a bit tricky sometimes are never unfair, though the first exam was long for the 50 minutes allotted. Overall, I really recommend Niemann. He has a very generous grading scheme, and I would take him again.

Niemann is great, but difficult to pay attention to. He's got that kind of voice that is incredibly easy to doze off to. Luckily for people taking Physics 5B (the equivalent), the lectures are now podcasted so you can review at any time, but the dude truly does lecture well with concise slides and helpful clicker questions / conceptual content in his slides. For this class he also does try to help you summarize the information, like for the thermodynamic processes in table format, something that I actually came back to in my future classes.

Of course, he genuinely knows his stuff and he doesn't try to trick you. I think he does try to have some sort of connection between discussion and the exams (although I wasn't as consistent of a student back when I took this class over a year ago). As in, I did mostly try on the homework but often rushed it, never went to discussion, struggled to pay attention in class given personal circumstances. But Niemann actually accommodated my difficult situation and I ended up taking an incomplete in winter 2018 and finishing this class in spring 2018, focusing mainly on midterm 2 content and the final although he did allow me to retake midterm 1.

With all of that said, it was still clear to me that he was a fair grader and nice guy which surprised me since he is unbelievably stoic. It's definitely his face and accent. But he was always nice, and his demos in class were honestly so cool and adorable.

Also as others have said if he makes mistakes in the exams, he ends up giving you the points. And if students struggle with a problem on the exam he may basically not count that question on the exam and reduce the number of points the exam is worth.

I am someone who actually loves physics / enjoys physics but nevertheless I never thought he pushed too hard on any of the problems. Some of the multiple choice questions were a bit tricky but he's definitely solid. Try to stay awake during lectures though and not fall behind. Grading is also now more generous for the physics 5 series, but I forget how that works as I was still graded based on Physics 6C although it became physics 5B by the time I finished in Spring 2018.

Took Physics 5B (don't know why Bwalk doesn't have 5B listed as a course...) with Dr. Niemann. His tests required you to do some outside thinking which was not covered in the homework or the discussion worksheets but if you understood the material it was doable. He is very kind in grading for our class because he made a 6 point part on our midterm only with 3 points so the average of the midterms went up because it was a problem that many people missed and he also gave everyone full credit on a final question because he used the wrong numbers (using the correct method would have given an impossible answer- it was unsolvable). He is definitely a reasonable grader. His tests are difficult if you don't properly understand the material. He is funny and always wears black polo shirt. every. single day. I also think he was a German accent

Loved Dr. Niemann!! Such a good lecturer and I am terrible at physics. I have never understood it very well and Dr. Niemann made it so clear. His class is very doable.

Grade breakdown:
30% Midterm (there were 2 midterms, better of the two scores used here)
15% Lab
10% HW
45% Final.

No curve and no midterm regrades. Do well on the first midterm and you won't have to worry about doing super well on the second one. I recommend going attending the second midterm though if you do well on the first one so you can see the problems. One of the questions on MT2 showed up again on the final so it was helpful to have already seen it.

I HIGHLY recommend this class. I never thought that physics would have been my favorite class of the quarter.

Honestly just not a fan of physics but Niemann is probably the best teacher you'll get for this class. The lecture itself isn't super engaging but if you actually make an effort to pay attention, the content is understandable. Same workload as Physics 6A and 6B but more on the difficulty level of 6A than 6B (which was the worst class ever).

Probably one of the best physics professors. I thought the class was very fair and he explained the topics well. He also has a good sense of humor. I liked that there was not much homework. This class' difficulty is about moderate. It's especially easy if you get a past test from the test bank because he makes them soooooo similar. Overall, if he comes up as a professor for any physics class, you would be crazy not to take him!
