He is a nice guy and responds to email but is socially awkward. His exams are on the easier side compared to some of the other professors at UCLA. BUT he can't speak English for shit it's more like Korengrish. Seek outside help such as Covel, AAP, or Swartwood tutoring if you want to do well in this class. Do well on all the homework and one midterm (he drops one midterm). I got a 70 on the first midterm and a 87 on the second and because of that I have a 100 going into the final with the curve. Lecture is pointless since he can't speak English and reads from the book. If you decide to take this class just do the homework, turn it in, and get outside tutoring and you'll be more than fine.

In all honestly, Song is a pretty lousy professor. His lectures are borderline incomprehensible, and you have to mostly study from the book. That being said, his midterms and final were extremely easy...mostly homework questions regurgitated with different numbers. I probably skipped half my lectures and did decently well on the midterms and final, so I am expecting a B+/A-, if his curve is generous then an A is also possible. My recommendation: if you can study on your own from the book, take Song. His class is extremely easy as long as you can teach yourself.

Let me just say that I took this class in high school and had a 4 on the AP exam.

I am so glad I knew the material. It's very tough to understand his English; I don't know what I would have done if I hadn't taken it.

The first midterm is easy, but it gets progressively harder from there. He told us to memorize proofs that would show up on the test, and it turns out, they didn't show up. Average on the final was under 65%.

I ended up with a B in the class. Class is curved at the end, after all points are added up, median is a B-.

The only way you'll survive this class is if you know calculus beforehand. His tests are fairly easy and the curve is very low, but his accent is horrible, impossible to understand. I just never went to class

Although it is obvious that Song is very smart and knows his math, it is hampered by his thick, impossible to understand, accent. I sat in the first couple rows every class and I still could not understand one word that came out of his mouth. I often found myself zoning out because all I heard was background noise.
I went to every class thinking that I would understand him a little better after each one, but I was wrong every time.
Having such an impossible to understand professor, I assumed my discussion TA would be able to help out a lot. It turns out that he was worst than Song, if that's possible. Ngoc Le, just like Song, is a smart guy, but his accent and stuttered made it worthless going to discussion.
The only reason I got an A in the class is because I remembered everything from my AP Calc class in high school. If you don't feel confident in math then I highly recommend getting covel tutoring.
Run, don't walk, away from this professor.

So I noticed that not many people sign up for his class and instead opt for Park. Bottom line is, take Park if you want to learn the material, and take Song if you want easy exams. Song's exams were straight from the book and homework (just with different numbers). He gets the harder problems from the chapter reviews. The curve is set pretty low, which I don't understand. His accent is very heavy, but you get used to it. Just sit in the front.

Professor Song seems like a nice guy. Maybe he is, but the other reviewers were NOT KIDDING about his accent. It's very difficult to understand what he is saying sometimes, and his writing (on the board) is usually not much clearer. If you already have a good understanding of calculus, you'll probably be fine in his class and don't even need to go to his lectures--his tests were straightforward and maybe not super easy, but nowhere near impossible. I took the class without knowing any calculus and I still got a B so that should say something about the tests. His office hours are completely useless and he doesn't do reviews so make sure you have a study group and/or tutoring if you think you'll need help!

Honestly, even I am a chinese, I can't understand his english. His english is more than accent. He can't pronounce a word correctly. And his curve is not generous at all. Avoid him if you could.

A VERY awful professor. I have tons of experience with Chinese professors who started English late in life and have never had a problem understanding them, even when others in the class were complaining about it. That said, this guy is incomprehensible. Apart from that, he has nothing to offer.
His lecture consists of silently copying something from his notes (which is straight from the book) on the black board for like two minutes with very sloppy handwriting and then discussing it in his special Chinese-English pidgin, or whatever one could politely call it. I'd say only about 10% of the class was going to lecture consistently.
Given all this, differential equations is a very easy thing to learn, the UCLA course is very slow-paced (only a few chapters total) and the Polking book is very clear. Learn it on your own, like you probably do with most math. So if you are one of those blessed few who actually demands engaging instructors from your university, avoid this guy. He certainly damaged my idea of what kind of school UCLA is and who they let teach.

I took AP Calculus AB in high school and got a 4 on the exam. that being said: Professor Song is easy as hell. His first midterm was a joke, but people still managed to screw up, how I do not know, MAYBE BECAUSE THEY ARE STUPID. The homework is 15%, so do well on it and it is free points. He drops your lowest midterm, which is cool. The final was a bitch, but HE HAS SUCH A NICE CURVE. THE CURVE WILL HELP YOU SOOO MUCH!

PROFESSOR SONG CANNOT SPEAK A WORD OF FUCKING ENGLISH! he is korean, AND EVEN THEN I DONT THINK HE SPEAKS KOREAN WELL EITHER! I THINK HE DOESNT KNOW HOW TO SPEAK AT ALL HAHA! HE NEEDS TO LEARN ENGLISH! He probably is here for some research on proving why 1+1 =2. HE IS A TERRIBLE EXPLAINER! DO NOT GO TO lecture, it is a useless waste of time. Just go to discussion, bring your book with you and just make your ta work all the week's hard homework problems. In other words, make your TA do some work for you. If you have a ta named Haokun, avoid him! He talks like a fag and a robot, nobody likes him. He got pissed cause some kids in our discussion called him at 11:30PM and woke him up for help on homework. If yo get a B grade in this, then you are stupid. OH ON A COMPLETELY FUNNY NOTE: I SKIPPED LECTURE ALL THE TIME, BUT I MISSED THE MOST IMPORTANT LECTURE: THE LECTURE WHEN HE WORE SUPER TIGHT PANTS THAT SHOWED HIS YOU KNOW WHAT!!!! HAHHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!

I GOT AN A+ IN THIS CLASS AND I SUCK ASS AT MATH! THIS CLASS IS STUPID, TAKE IT. IT IS AN EASY A
