Lectures aren't mandatory, but they are helpful background content for writing the essays. Most of the book is discussed in discussion, so reading is mandatory if you want to keep up with discussion and plan out the essays. Usually the TA's were the ones to help you structure and write the essays. Pretty easy class for the writing II requirement.
