Free Speech in Workplace
Description: (Same as Communication Studies M172.) Lecture, three hours. Focus on concept of freedom of expression in workplace and how First Amendment, case law, and federal and state statutes affect one's ability to speak at work. Conflict between discrimination law and ability to speak freely at work as well as meaning and limits of academic freedom. P/NP or letter grading.

Winter 2016 - This is one of the best classes I have taken in the Labor & Workplace Studies Minor. It really puts the "Workplace" in "Labor & Workplace Studies". I've learned immensely useful information about employment and labor laws in this class, and gained an increased understanding of how these effect the workplace (both union and non union). Great coverage of harassment/discrimination law. Very confusing concept that Fink teaches very clearly. As an LS Minor, I want to help people who are marginalized in the workplace. Knowing the law in this area is soooo valuable, because I now know the difference between "legally actionable" discrimination vs. rude treatment that can't be fought in court.
